It's a great starter cam!! :)  I have it and had a ton of fun with it, now it's my backup body. :)  Good luck!

Allie, what are you using as your primary body these days? I don't know if I saw when you mentioned you got a new camera!

Fortunatefool, congrats on the purchase and welcome to the club!!

T2i is my primary camera now, I love it, especially its 60fps video capability!

Welcome aboard!

Ditto, get a nice fixed focal length... the 50 1.8 is a ton of bang for your buck, the 50 1.4 is more $$ but super sharp.

Well, I'm definitely just a casual shooter - my main priority is taking pictures of my friends and family....mostly candid rather than formal. It is also a main priority to capture my brother and sister in law playing their sports (soccer, football, baseball).

If you want to capture sports, I would get a 70-200 lens.  This is why I asked as the 50 mm while a nice lens is not my most often used lens.  For me, my tendency is to shoot action and sports or wildlife and a long tele is much more appropriate.

The 24-70 is also a good all purpose lens. Esp with your crop sensor which will actually give you a zoom up to 112mm. I should warn you though that it's expensive and heavy. If I bring my camera out to shoot at parties or while traveling, I bring my 24-70, but my 50 stays on my camera 75% of the time....

"thanks doolittlebride. is your 70-200 lens your most often used lens??"

Nope, my most often used lens is a 24-70 2.8 (fixed aperture). However, I must stress that this is used on a pro body* with a full frame sensor. You have a crop sensor so the equivalent lens is a 17-55 2.8. I have that lens on my the one crop sensor body I have, a 40D.

The 17-55 is the "pro-sumer" version of your 18-55 kit lens. It differs in that it has a fixed aperture- it can stay at 2.8 at any zoom length while the 18-55 varies from 3.5-5.6 based on the focal distance.

I will say that the 70-200 2.8 IS is my second most often used lens and the rest follow like this:

100 2.8 macro

16-35 2.8

15 2.8

Lensbaby

Also, keep in mind I am primarily a wedding, event, and family photographer. For fun I like to shoot action/sports.  I'm a firm believer in buying the right tool for the job and not just for the sake of having that tool.  Who cares if you have a 50 1.2 or 1.4 if that lens isn't appropriate for what you want to shoot most.

(*Note: I have  4 5D bodies, a 40D and a 30D. I also have one 5D converted to infrared on which I keep a 24 2.8)

I got it when I first got my camera and I thought it was a waste of money.

I don't like to use the term waste of money but rather, your money would be better spent on more quality glass. That lens is not particularly sharp and you might be rather disappointed with it after a fairly short period of time.
