London and Paris: Anyone Ever Lived There?

My family has just moved into a new home, but we don't plan to stay here that long. We are thinking of moving either to the Bay Area or even out of the country like London or Paris. Has anyone ever lived in either of these places? What was your experience?

i lived in london and traveled many times to paris. loved it. if i only i weren't so attached to my family, i'd totally live there forever in a heartbeat!

to live there (as an american) you either have to be a:

a) trust fund baby

b) have a kickass job to be able to afford an acceptable quality of life. luckily i had an awesome job so i had a great time. but try living in london on minimum wage..the experience would be drastically different.

oh and you need the proper work permit. so either marry a brit, or find a company willing to write a letter to their government saying that they need YOU and not one of their citizens. Basically the company has to sponsor your time there while you live there.

awesome. totally do-able. the hardest part is finding a company over there sooo in love with you that they'd sponsor your husband so he can get a work visa. its been done, just takes a while to find that company and schmooze them....of course unless you have connections with a british company, then you can get that without a problem.

My oldest sister lives in London. I go there a lot to see her. She loves it, but as an American, it is super hard to get a visa. She went to boarding school then college there and they still would not allow her to have one. So she had to go back to school to get her masters degree, now they finally gave her a visa and she has been there for 13 years!

London= very expensive, definitely for the trust fund kids. But it also depends on which side you live on. Anything in Chelsea is super super expensive, even Pho is like $20 per bowl from a cheapy stand!

I hear Copenhagen is great fun too!

I'm a bit biased since the Bay is my home. But, after living in So Cal for almost 6 years, I have to admit that I'd prefer to live in the Bay. The air is cleaner, traffic isn't nearly as bad (unless you go to the city and run into rush hour), and there are more suburban areas for families. But, the job opportunities is limited and the beaches are not as nice as Southern Cal.

I live in San Francisco right now but I am originally from Europe. I lived in London for 2.5 years before I moved here. I loved living in London - but that was in my 20s. It is so happening and we went clubbing all the time. On the downside, the weather really sucks. It rained almost every single day. I am not a big fan of Paris, as I find the French generally not approachable and unfriendly, and although I speak French, I don't enjoy the language.

If we were to move again, we might go live in Australia. I love Sydney, so beautiful and the Aussies are so relaxed and fun.
