Spring/Summer 2012 Baby Bumps!

Maggie's Birth Story

July 16th, 2012

I was scheduled to go into work that morning but our little
girl had another plan in mind. I was scheduled for my c section for August 1st
because Maggie was breech and nothing that I was doing would get her to flip. I
had accepted the fact that a c section was going to be our new birth plan and I
was excited to know just exactly when she was going to be here – or so I
thought J

I woke up at 5:20 am with this weird feeling and as soon as I started to get
out of bed I felt a huge gush and I ran to the bathroom (as much running as a
37 week preggo girl can manage!). I sat on the toilet as my water continued to “break”
and yelled out to Scott who was still sleeping that my water had broken. He
looked at me all sleepily eyed and goes “What?” I yelled again – “My water
broke – we’re going to have a baby today!” He says, “Okay” and immediately
starts taking the sheets off of the bed – he didn’t want my fluids to ruin our
new mattress lol

I called the staffing office to let them know this was the start of my FMLA
then I immediately called my mom so that she could make it up here in time for
the arrival of our baby girl. Her reaction was hilarious – she just kept
saying, “Okay, okay, oh my goodness, oh my goodness. I need to leave right now!”
(And I’m pretty sure she left within 15 minutes of that phone call!

About an hour later we made our way to the hospital. We were both so excited
and a little nervous. We knew today was going to be the day! There were a few
things we still had left to do that I told Scott we needed to get done that
week – ie: install the car seat and pack our bags.  Whoops!

(Smiling to take a picture in between contractions)

When we got to labor and delivery they did an ultrasound to make sure she was
still breech and she in fact was. I was only 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced at
that time and wasn’t experiencing any contractions yet. But boy did that change
quickly! By 7:30 I had my first contraction. At first they weren’t too bad and
I was kind of glad that I was able to know what a contraction felt like. But
that got old very quickly! They kept pushing back the time that I’d go down for
my c section – first it was 9 am, then 10, then 11. By 1030 I was starting to
get pretty uncomfortable and ready for our baby girl to be here! But Maggie was
tolerating the contractions perfectly – which made me feel a lot better. I was
really thankful for the Bradley classes because I was able to stay so relaxed
and breathe right through each one – the nurse even commented on how well I was
doing.  Scott was right next to me the entire time encouraging me and telling me how we were going to meet our little girl soon – he was such a rock throughout it all!

Finally at 1130 they took us down to the OR and boy was I happy! At this time
my contractions were coming every 2 minutes and increasing in intensity so I
was ready to have the spinal done!

The entire staff from my OB, the resident, anesthesiologist, nurses, techs –
everyone was amazing and made our little girl’s entry into the world absolutely

Scott had to wait out in the hall while they did my spinal – which was not a
pleasant experience, especially when you’re having contractions as he has a
needle in your back. Thankfully it didn’t take him very long. What a strange
feeling it is having a spinal done – first my butt was numb then everything
just started feeling tingly. Then I look down at my legs and I swear they were
straight but nope, the nurses had them propped up and doing all sorts of things
to me to prep me and I had no feeling whatsoever! Strange. Thankfully Scott was
able to come back in and sit at my head next to me as we waited for our baby
girl to get here. The worst part about the surgery was when they were pulling
her out the resident was putting a lot of pressure on my upper abdomen/chest
area and I’m talking a LOT. I felt like I couldn’t breathe and a few choice
words came out of my mouth that I immediately apologized for.

And then we heard that sweet, sweet cry of our
baby girl and I busted into tears and nothing else in this world mattered.

They cleaned her up pretty quickly and daddy got to cut the cord. And then they
brought her to me and placed her on my chest while they were still sewing me
up. Then after I was all sewn up they took all three of us to the recovery room
for the next 2 hours. They placed her on my chest and we did skin to skin and I
was able to nurse her within 45 minutes of her being delivered. It was so sweet
watching Scott interact with her for the 1st time – it absolutely
melted my heart. That has been one of my favorite parts about becoming parents –
I love seeing Scott totally adore his little girl. It makes me fall in love
with him all over again!

Even though we had taken Bradley Method classes and were planning on having a
natural birth – we were both very happy with how Maggie’s delivery went. I
loved that she never left my sight and we were able to bond right away – which were
my biggest concerns when I found out I was going to have a c section. And now
we have our perfect little girl in our lives and we couldn’t be happier to be
parents. We had such a positive c section experience and hopefully it helps some other moms who are nervous about having to have one. And thankfully my recovery has gone pretty smoothly - I'm already feeling back to my normal self, just sleep deprived :)

Sounds like it went as well as it could! I'm glad to hear the c-section was positive especially coming from wanting a natural birth. Gives me hope in case I am put in that situation. Congrats again on your cutie!
