Major Crisis with my Wedding Venue!

The place where I put down a deposit to have my wedding had a huge food poisoning incident last weekend. One of my bridesmaids called me to let me know, because she actually has it pretty bad (so do her parents). I know that this can happen to anyone - anywhere. I am just really stressed and don't want to have my wedding there anymore. I have a large amount of guests that are invited to my wedding there, that currently have food poisoning. The brides aunt is currently hospitalized from the food poisoning! I just don't want my guests to feel uncomftorable and not want to eat at my wedding! I mean the food is the most expensive part!! I am so stressed!! If I didn't have an overlap of guests, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. UGH!!! What would you girls do?

Call them and see if somehow due to this you can get out of your contract and get your money back...otherwise it might be even worse not getting your money and not having any where else to go!

Have you looked into any other venues to see if they are available?

My FMIL sent them a letter, asking if we can get our deposit back, but it has been 2 days and I havn't heard back! I want to cry... I don't know what to do. I am afraid to call! I hadn't really looked at other venues, because I was so in love with my place. I guess I need to start.

That is crazy!!! I wonder if they'll shut down...it seems a little bit bigger than just food poisoning. Someone was hospitalized!! Yikes!!! They should really give a deposit back!! That's a health issue!

Ya, I would get your money back and get a new place. People will not be comfortable eating there. I have never been back to the two places I have gotten food poisoning. I wouldn't ask for your money back, I would insist. You may need to deal with the venue's insurance company.

Also, be sure to report them to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) you can file a report online.

I am positive they won't shut down (as long as they cooperate with the food poisoned brides mother). I am sure that they won't even have trouble finding another wedding for my date. I feel like morally, they should return my deposit. But I really don't think I have a leg to stand on since I signed a contract and gave them $5,500 as a non-refundable deposit. I just feel like this is a very "SPECIAL" circumstance! I just wanted to make sure I am not being bitchy or high maintenance for wanting my deposit back.

You know sometimes if you use the threat of the BBB during your convo with them they will just make you happy so they don't have to deal with getting reported. I would just call...and if you can't get anyone after a few trys then I suggest seeking legal help.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this!!!

Another thing to consider is that they may have spent the deposit.. Non refundable sounds spent.

I agree they should return your deposit or let you bring in your own caterer and refund part of the deposit.

I think a trip over there might help to get someone to respond to you.

That's a good idea if they let you do it then it will cut down the cost of the venue drastically...right?

"I have a large amount of guests that are invited to my wedding, that currently have food poisoning. The bride's aunt is currently hospitalized from the food poisoning!"

That statement right there is all the reason I would need to call the place and get my money back. It might be better to go there and speak with the manager or whomever is in charge. Sometimes incidents like this happen and they suck and we all try to move on. But the fact that a bunch of guests that will be attending your wedding got sick from this place (make sure to mention the aunt who was hospitalized). I'd simply tell the venue that these guests won't come to my wedding now, as they're afraid to eat the food.

You're definately not being high maintenence, especially since you're 10 1/2 months away. I'd just part ways and find a new place.

If there are any lawyers on this board, maybe they can chime in on some sort of way to get your deposit back. There's got to be a way.

Good luck!

I would seriously think about finding another place though. You don't want people to avoid your wedding because they are nervous about this.... it is a bummer, I know.

Their are lawyers and firms that specialize in Food Litigation and food poisoning cases like this. That is not my area of law, but I can help direct you to legal advice if it comes to that. I would try to get your money back first. You need to be firm about this, even if you have to fake it, you and your FI need to grow some serious backbone and go in there and demand your money back. Take a copy of the letter you sent (that is legally important) and send a follow-up email and/or letter after you go talk to someone there. In that email/letter, be sure to state your name and the names of whomever went with you (don't go alone), the name of the people you spoke to at the venue, the reason you spoke with them, the date, the date of the incident, the date your wedding is scheduled for, that you went in person after not getting a response to the letter sent on (date), and that you were either granted (or denied) the refund of your money. Be sure to send this to the person/people you spoke with, as well as the highest ranking person you can find on their website.

Hope this helps, PM me if you need more detailed advice
