Married Ladies - Let's Talk Photographers

Hi Ladies,

I'm curious to learn what everyone else's photographer experience was and has been like post wedding. I'm just curious if I am being unreasonable, or turning into a post wedding bridezilla.

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album?

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly?

4. How many photos did you have to go through?

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day?

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered?

Thx, ladies. Your feedback on this is beyond invaluable to me.

ARGH....so wish I could answer this!! :)  We still don't have our images! :(  It was two months as of yesterday...althought, she did quote us two months on AVERAGE.  She's in Mexico again shooting a wedding so we won't get them for a little while.  She tried to get them to us before she left but felt like she would be rushing the editing too much and wanted to do them the right way.  So we hope to have them before Christmas.  So hard!!

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered: We got our proofs at the 2 month mark

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album? I've been lagging completely and have yet to choose our album photos. Our photographer has been waiting for 2 months for us to tell her what photos, album and style we want! It's just so hard to limit the pictures.

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly? Our proofs were posted online, delivered on a cd and also in hard copy form. I haven't bought any wedding pictures on the website, but I did for our e-pic and it was pretty standard that I've seen other photographers have.

4. How many photos did you have to go through? We had a little less than 900 photos.

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day? I don't think the service dropped, but I knew she still had more weddings the rest of the hectic season. Now that it's offseason, I'm expecting faster service.

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered? I was surprised that not as many pictures were "artistically altered." I guess I had a distorted view of how many pictures would actually be enhanced. Out of the 900 pictures, maybe 90 were given that artistic look. So 10%. I felt like she took a million pictures the day of, and I was given the top 900, even though I had 2 photographers. My friend had 2 or 3 photographers, and she had 3 cds for a total of 15000 pictures. Insane!

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered

~ I had online access within a week and all the digital negatives within about 3 - 31/2 weeks.

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album?

~ can't help here - I did my own albums through Picaboo with the digital negatives.

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly?

~ my photog uses collages.net or .com (I forget) and I thought it was super user-freindly. I would have never booked without being able to get the digital negatives on CD though, I did so much more for soooo much cheaper with those.

4. How many photos did you have to go through?

~ Over 1000

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day?

~ she's a little hard to get a hold of but she was like that before the wedding - not a big teckie so her emails were always pretty brief.

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artistically altered? What percentage would you say were altered?

~ hmmmm - one thing I thought about was getting to see the images she edited out - I may have liked some of those! I don't think she did a ton of re-touching but overall I was very happy with my pics.

EVERY photog out there uses AT LEAST minimal retouching (the good ones at least, maybe not every Craigslist photog)....i.e. color correction, sharpness correction, white balance....and every image they give you will most likely have something done...very very few come out perfect SOOC (straight out of the camera).  That's why we think they look awesome....most times you don't even know what's been done...now some artistic edits are obvious...like antiqueing, or vignetting...but most you won't even notice.....and i doubt if you'll find a photog who'll give you ALL of the unedited images....i liken that to a chef serving up "test" dishes that didn't come out right...that's the photographer's name and reputation out there...only the best will be given to you/shown on a blog/website, etc.  Example:  our photog took 450 engagement pictures....of that, she said half will be good, and 20% will be great....we ended up with 90 "finished" images.....

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered

We get our CD of all of our pictures 6months from our wedding date, but she posts all edited photos in a online gallery available for purchase within 4-6 weeks from our wedding.

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album?

My photographer will be giving us a pre-designed album with the pictures that she likes the best.  When she is finished designing the album, she will send it to us to make any adjustments.  Makes it easier on us, so we are not shifting through a 1000 photos trying to pic the best ones.  We should have our album design right after the New Year.

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly?

N/A

4. How many photos did you have to go through?

N/A

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day?

Not at all!  I love my photographer, and feel like we have sort of become "friends".  We still keep in touch almost daily through Facebook and texting.

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered?

We had almost 900 photos retouched, and perfected by our photographer.  I am not sure if she edited every photo, because we have not received our CD yet.  However, 900 edited photos is just fine with me! :o)

Ok, so I am not crazy or unreasonable. Here are my answers. What are your thoughts?

1. We waited 6 months and had to chase our photog to get them...literally overnighted across the country to my grandmas house for Thanksgiving.

2. Still waiting on an album proof, so far it's been 3 months and no communication or timeline.

3. We only received online proofs at first. They were in no order making it very hard to decide. We had over 3,000 photos to look through, and it took 15 hours.

4. I understand there are other weddings, but I have seena huge drop off

5. We only received 20 finished photos, out of the 3k. No portraits, no family photos.

I am pushing back and requesting more.

To JackieG's point, only the 20 photos had been retouched or color enhanced.

I feel like I was given all the raw materials and told to fend for myself. I've avoided posting anything because I loved working with my photographer and didn't want to harm the reputation. But at this point, I needed to check back with the PW ladies and see if I was being unreasonable.

Hi A!!! =)

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered

Proofs were delivered about 2 months later, in the form of two albums that came to my doorstep.

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album?

After we chose our album photos, the proof was ready in 1-2 weeks. The album was ready in 1-2 months.

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly?

They were delivered via website, and also two proof albums that were bound by silk.

4. How many photos did you have to go through?

The proof album had 700 photos I think. That was A LOT of photos to go through. I think my photographer may have edited down a bit before sending it to us.

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day?

Nope. My photographer was awesome the whole time.

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered?

I'm not sure how many were artistically altered, but I loved all the proofs that she delivered. It was so hard to pick just 30 photos.

oh Wil.....man...I know who your photog is (apparently he's shooting a wedding in South Africa right now, and recently booked a job for $15K!)....i would NOT have expected this....i would understand if a less-seasoned photog gave you the materials to "fend for yourself" but i would expect "full service" from your photog....I think you should let him know how you're feeling....and best of luck to you....he DOES take fab photos....

also girls...don't be mislead by expecting a lot of "finished" images from the total amount shot...i.e. if your photog takes 20-30 shots of you two cutting the cake....only a couple will be really excellent, due to blinking, other people's flashes going off, people getting in the way, etc.....and really....how many do you need?  like, less than 5 I'd say....

Man, this is tough. Wil, I adore your photog and would have hired him in a heartbeat if I had the budget. But it sounds like he's being very unprofessional. Only 20 retouched photos?!?! Was there anything in the contract about how many photos would be retouched and in what timeframe? Have you sent him an email or called him expressing your concern? I totally understand not wanting to post about this because of his popularity and rep. But, I think this needs to be addressed.

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered, 2.5 weeks

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album? N/A, we did our own albums.

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly? Yes and no. The site was easy to navigate, but I would have liked to be able to see the photos a bit bigger. I ended up choosing a few photos that were blurry and I couldn't tell that from the website.

4. How many photos did you have to go through? over 1000

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day? nope, not at all.

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered? Over 300 were color-corrected and slightly retouched (nothing major). I also arranged in our contract to receive an additional 200 RAW images so I could do my own retouching.

Thx, Ladies.

I was calling and emailing for a month with no response. I was hurt because I knew what he was doing because we're connected on Twitter. I felt that if he had time to update his Twitter, he should have had time to email me back. I was very disappointed, that I could not even get a return phone call. I would call and then get an email back instead of a phone call.

Maybe there is another step, maybe more will be delivered, but without setting my expectations I don't know what to think or know. I've never been married before or gone through the wedding photography process.

I've made mistakes and I'v learned a lot. I hired our photog for 3 days, so we paid more than the avg bride, which makes it all more painful.

I'm trying very hard to remain positive at this point.

Wil,

I do have to say that I love your photographers work. The picture in your Avatar is actually one of my inspiration pictures for my wedding. I would have to say though, busy or not, when you commission as much money as her does for a wedding the product should be exactly what the bride and groom are hoping for. If he can't meet a deadline he should communicate this clearly to you. I am sorry this is happening but I am sure it will all work out for the best. You seem like you had a truly magical day and I hope everything turns around with the photog.

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered: Online ones took about 10 weeks, to get the images in the mail- a little longer...

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album?

We didn't get an album, BUT I hear from friends that do- that this is a long process...

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly?  Yes, easy website.  They were in order of the day, and had numbers underneath.

4. How many photos did you have to go through? Over 1000 w/ our main photog.  We also had pics come from our other photogs.

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day? Not really, I just felt like I was annoying asking for my pictures- but we were expeting them since that was the deadline they gave us.  So we didn't want to be forgotten about or something?

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered?

NO!  The blogs always nice, but the others just run through a batch in photshop, so now I have been altering them which is sooooo time consuming!

Plus we had two other photogs assisting them, and they just gave us a CD of their images.  So NOTHINGS edited and there are bad pics on there too- so I have to go through and clean up the albums...  I don't mind b/c we have some AMAZING pictures, it just would have been helpful to have this part done?

I know many photogs do this- so don't be surprised ladies.  I see amazing photogs blogs all the time- and then when I see the 'regular' images or their albums, its not as "ewww "awwww" you know? Even the best photogs out there- Just an FYI

~ HMM :)

Yeah, I think your feelings are justified, I would be hurt too. I would do your best to keep trying to get more info from him. Perhaps mentioning that his lack of communication is really making the whole experience a disappointment. The threat of a negative review on message boards is something I'd throw out there as well. It could be he's booking himself too much and can't keep up... and he's neglecting the weddings that he's already shot.

Go over your contract one more time too and see if there's any mention of a timeframe and a quantity of retouched photos. If he's in breach of his contract, you may have grounds to get some of your money back.

In the end, if you don't get any more retouched photos from him, I'd be happy to help. I have a lot of the tools for photo retouching. Just let me know

Good luck!

I agre with HMM's last point. I also reviewed the albums my photog had done. Again setting my expectations.

Batty - I need to dig out the contract and review, and thanks for offering to help. I have expressed disappointment. I am keeping reviews out of it for now. At this point he's in breach imo. I have no albums which are outlined in my contract.

Aw, Wil, so sorry you're having issues.  Like Abattyref, I love your photog, but this must be so frustrating for you!  Here's my two cents:

1. What was the timing for proofs to be delivered: About two months.

2. Once the you chose your album photos, how long did it take to get your first proof of the album? N/A

3. how were your proofs and digital photos delivered? If by website did you feel that it was manageable/user friendly?  The proofing website was fine, but low-res.  The real digital images (delivered via DVD) were what I liked.

4. How many photos did you have to go through? We had over 1000 images, after our photog edited out the out-takes.

5. Did you feel service dropped off at all after the big day? No - there was a snafu with the shipping of our DVD with the digital images, but our photog was responsive and apologetic that the images took longer to get to us than originally stated.  I didn't hear from her as much after the wedding, but I thought that was natural.

6. Did you feel enough photos were retouched, artisitically altered? What percentage would you say were altered?  Honestly, I don't think any of our images were retouched at all - if they were, it was subtle.  But retouching really wasn't part of our original agreement, so I wasn't disappointed.  I actually had a lot of fun playing around with the images myself (mostly using Picnik, since I don't have Photoshop).  My photog was clear from the start that she doesn't like cropping, but I went hog-wild with the cropping.  The one thing I would have liked was to have more - I forget what they're called - films, I think?  You know, to make the photos look vintage, like Beatie's profile pic, or this one:

Aw Wil so sorry photo 159817-1

But again, that wasn't part of our agreement, and my hubby isn't a big fan of the look anyway, so I guess it's no big deal.

I don't have any advice in addition to what the other girls have suggested - but good luck and let us know how it goes!
