Merging Finances?

1. Did you (or are you) merge your $$?

2. Did you keep anything just in your name, like mutual funds or other assets

3. Did you have a game plan to merge your $$?

4. Did you come in to the relationship with debt, did you merge that too? (I mean pay them out of the joint account, or your own separate accounts)

We are planning to merge our finances.  We will probably merge what investment assests we have (not many)...not sure if my retirement plan, for example, can be merged?

We will have a plan before we dive into actually doing it, but we haven't constructed it yet.

We both have car loans and I have a small student loan...we will not be merging debt.

The only thing we have done so far that has both our names on it is our tax return.  And it will probably stay that way with one exception.  We plan to open a joint account for household bills.  Everything else will stay separate.

I've been merged for years. When we met I was 18 and he was 20 so we grew our finances together in the first place. We aleady share the bank account and savings accounts. I think I'm even already on his 401K, or whatever they have at work. After getting married it will just be a name change and easier to deal with everyone.

1. Did you (or are you) merge your $$? We plan to merge our finances together. DH is from England and has only recently moved to the US. He will open an account or two on his own so he can start building credit but our main finances will be together.

2. Did you keep anything just in your name, like mutual funds or other assets I have an online savings account that I will keep in my name only. He will be opening another savings account that will be in just his name.

3. Did you have a game plan to merge your $$? We don't really have a game plan. (I guess we really need to start thinking about that!) I'm the one who handles all of the bill paying so I'll kind of stay in charge of everything.

4. Did you come in to the relationship with debt, did you merge that too? (I mean pay them out of the joint account, or your own separate accounts) DH has no debt. My car is paid off but I do have a significant amount of credit card debt. DH considers is "our" debt now so we'll just be paying it off with the joint account.

We merged our finances but still have our personal accounts that we put $50 a paycheck in.  We use that money to buy gifts for each other during birthdays or Xmas since it will spoil the surprise otherwise since we can view our joint statments.  Get it?  Luckily, we came into this marriage without any debt!!!
