Miss vs. Ms.

I'm working on my place cards and don't know whether to use "Miss" or "Ms." for single women.  I've tried to look up online.  Some say that "Miss" is used for under 18, while older unmarried women are "Ms."  For divorced women, I used "Ms." with widows as "Mrs."  Most of our unmarried women guests are age 20+.  Help, I'm confused!

For my name tags I used Ms regardless of age or marital status. Some people dont like to be singled out because they are divorced or single so for uniformity i used Ms.

I really dont care care if it is not correct english. In the end people wont even remember what was on their name cards.

I had the same question awhile back.  Here is the thread:
http://www.projectwedding.com/post/list/miss-ms-or-mrs

I ended up using Miss for all of my unmarried (never married) friends.  For those that were unmarried/divorced or specified on the RSVP card I used Ms.

I always thought that Ms. was used to like unknown...whether you didn't want someone to know if you were married or single or if you don't know if the person is married or single... I don't know!

Like cryflore said I always thought Ms. was/could be used when the marital status is unknown.

This has nothing to do with Wedding etiquette but my daughter just started school and I had to write a note to her teacher, and I was aware of her marital status so I addressed it to Ms. Doe..

I know this didn't really answer your question. On my place cards I just used first and last name.

I agree with Aimee.  There were too many weird situations and hurt feelings from trying to assign a title.  For example, there were some married women who kept their maiden name and didn't want Mrs.  Others did.  I gave up and went without!

Miss strikes me as being younger in feel than Ms.- like 20 and younger.  Although I would use Ms. to address all age ranges.

Thanks ladies!  On the RSVP, some put "Miss" and others put "Ms" so that led to my confusion.  I think I'll go with "Miss" for under 18 or 21 and use "Ms" for the rest.
