Venues tend to cost less when you plan for a day other than Friday or Saturday...sometimes that's a huge money for couples.

Deciding not to have an open bar is also a saver..perhaps beer and wine.

Find a company that does DJ and photography packages. 2 services under 1 roof means less overhead and they usually pass the savings on to the bride... we do!

Spend less on decor, nobody is going to remember it a month after the wedding anyway!

After your dress and ring budget the DJ and photographer next. The DJ is going to entertain your guests all night and the photographer is going to capture the memories for you. Your DJ is 85% responsible for the success of your reception, so don't budget him less than your veggie tray :D

  1.  have your wedding at a different time than sat evening, which is the most expensive time slot.
  2. getting married on a holiday weekend costs more
  3. getting married in june costs more because it is the month most weddings takes place in.  all vendors charge more then.
  4. a sit down dinner may be cheaper than a buffet
  5. think dessert and champagne reception vs sit down dinner to save money
  6. sunday brunch is cheaper than a sit down dinner
  7. focus decorations on key places like the front of the aisle and the centerpieces on the tables.
  8. use in season flowers
  9. use cake stand ins, which are styrafoam covered in buttercream and or fondant and decorated as if it where a real cake.  only one layer needs to be real so you can cut the cake and have the typical photos.  when the caterer takes the cake to the kitchen to cut the cake, they have sheet cake in the kitchen that they use to supplement the cake.  the guests will never know the difference because the sheet cake will be the same as the wedding cake.
  10. forget a seperate dessert and just serve the wedding cake
  11. have up to 3 signature cocktails and serve a white wine, red wine, and beer.  not having an open bar saves a ton of money.
  12. skip the cocktail hour and go straight to the reception.
  13. limit the number of courses you serve at a sit down dinner.  realistically when you go to  a restaurant would you ever order an appetizer, salad, entree that includes a vegetable and starch, and a dessert or even more?  if not, then why serve that much food to your guests?  serving a salad or soup, entree that includes a vegetable and starch, and a dessert is really all that is needed.
  14. get married at an airport hotel vs a downtown hotel.  airport hotels are use to business travel during the week and often offer big discounts on weekends.  they have fewer ball rooms, which means all the focus will be on your wedding.  be sure it is a location with an event planner on staff and an airport shuttle.
  15. belong to a church, think about getting married there.  check and see if the church has anything you can use if you choose to have the reception there.  some churches have the round tables, chairs, and white table cloths available for weddings.  be sure to also find out if there is a fee for clean up or if they expect you to clean up after the wedding yourself.  trust me, some do.  if you have to rent the tables, chairs, and linens it may actually end up being cheaper to have the reception elsewhere.
  16. forget about opening champagne bottles for everyone for the toasts.  let everyone drink whatever drink they have.

thought of another...use sparkeling wine instead of champagne.  it can be a lot cheaper.  and technically if it doesnt come from the chapagne region of France it is sparkeling wine anyway.

Shop around for everything. Don't buy it the first time you see it unless you know you can't find it cheaper elsewhere. Use candles instead of big flower centerpieces. Candles are cheaper.

I say negotiate as best you can. I got my venue for two days with $500 off the rental price and I still get $300 refunded after the wedding. I got photography, videography and a photobooth from my photographer, and includes all day service with 2 photographers for $1100 all from negotiating with them. Same thing with my catering. Cocktail hour food, buffet dinner food, and some dessert with drinks and full service for 100 ppl for 1250.00 flat rate.
