Mother / Son Dance Question

Is it okay to have everyone join in the Mother / Son dance segment of a reception a couple of minutes into the song?

I've seen it done with the married couple, but wasn't sure what etiquette says about Mother/Son or Father/Daughter.

Thank you.

Hello and welcome to Project Wedding! I have never seen that done at any wedding I have been to, but these days weddings are more personal and geared towards the couples and their guest wants, likes and needs. If the mother and FI are fine with this being done, I say incorporate it in the wedding. This is one of those things that makes your wedding your own! Happy Planning!

First you should decide what kind of music Rock, country, classic etc... and then narrow it down from there. There are tons of lists on the internet. As long as you both agree that's what matters. Heres a few you might want to check out........

Simple Man by Shinedown or Lynyrd Skynyrd

My mama told me when I was young
Said sit beside me my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you some sunny day
Oh, yeah it will

Oh, take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You'll find a woman and you'll find love
And don't forget that there is a someone up above

And be a simple kind of man
And be something you'll love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can
Then you can

Don't get your lust from the rich man's gold
All that you need now is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby if you try
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net]

All that I want from you my son is to be satisfied

And be a simple kind of man
And be something you'll love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can?
If you can

Oh, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby if you try
All that I want from you my son is to be satisfied

And be a simple kind of man
Be something you'll love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can

So baby be a simple, be a simple man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can

I think that's a great way to do it if you have some shy dancers! You don't even have to do a mother/son dance or anything that you are not comfortable with - there are no rules! In fact, my good friend is getting married this fall and her FI is very unsure about the dancing part of it, so they are planning to do a special reading for his mom, in honor of her since neither of them want to dance!

As far as the music, just pick a song that you like and feels appropriate to you - it could be something special from childhood or something that seems "mother-son" like. My DH and his mom used "Through the Years" by Kenny Rogers, because they like country music and it just seemed like a good choice :)  My Dad and I used "Cherry Bomb" by John Mellencamp - a totally unconventional choice that went back to a special time when I was little. There are no rules!!

I agree with the others. We are skipping the mother/son (my FI's mother has passed away and he likes his stepmom but feels this should be his mom) and father/daughter (my father has also passed away. I was going to dance with my son in place of the father/daughter dance but my son is kinda of shy so I do not want him to be uncomfortable so he is walking me down the aisle
