My GYN appt - mixed emotions!

So I had my long awaited GYN appt today. Quick background - been off the pill since Aug and haven't got a period. Attempted provera 3 times and only spotted for 1 or 2 days each time. Since my blood work was all normal, doc thinks my issue is that I was a very active teenager, went through puberty late and still am fairly small so my brain isn't telling my body what to do. SO, she feels that clomid won't work and is sending me directly to a Fertility specialist for injectables.

I was feeling ok until I got out of the office and the tears started coming. While I'm happy to have a plan, still don't understand what is wrong with me.

Anyway, the wait list is about 6 months so I can't do anything but wait..... Just like I waited 5 months fo this apt :(

And I'm not quite sure what injectables mean? Does that also mean artificial insemination?

First...breathe. :)  I am sure hearing that news was overwhelming but know that it will be okay!  I'm so sorry that you have to wait so long for an appointment with an RE...that would be so frustrating!!  But like you said, and trust me I know, once you meet with the RE and have a plan you will feel much better!

What she meant by injectibles is a type of fertility drug.  Clomid/Femara are taken orally and usually only produce, at most, a couple of eggs per cycle.  Injectible medications (Follistim, Gonal-F, Menapur) are forms of the hormone FSH and they encourage your body to produce more eggs.  Many women that don't respond to the oral meds will respond to injectibles.  You don't need to do IUI (artificial insemination) with them but most people usually do.  FWIW, I just read that Jon and Kate (+8) were doing injectible meds in preparation for IUI but she developed too many follicles so her doctor cancelled the cycle and told them to avoid having sex during O.  Well they did anyway and ended up with six babies.  So you can still conceive through sex on injectibles.

I am nearing the end of my first IUI cycle with injectibles and honestly, it wasn't that bad at all.  Gave myself a shot in the belly each night for about a week and it didn't hurt at all.  But until you have your appointment with the RE, you won't really know which direction you'll be going in.  So try to relax...maybe see if you can get on a cancellation list?  And once you see the RE, I know you'll feel some relief!  Hang in there!

Thanks Beatie!!!

I have been trying to breathe - its just so tough to know that this is actually happening to me. I was hoping (obviously wishful thinking) that the doc would just look at my results and say 'oh you need this drug and everything will be normal'! But now we have a long road ahead of us and I'm hopeful that it will work out for us, I'm just not a fan of waiting. When I want something, I find a way to get it NOW - so with this, its tough because its out of my hands.

Thanks for the info in injectibles - that's very helpful. I still don't understand how they are going to get around the fact that I can't get my period - do the injectibles push ovulation even without a period?

That's crazy about Jon and Kate!!! My husband is being really cute and he's actually always wanted twins so he's happy at the fact that our chances of twins will be increased. I don't know how I feel about having twins but I now understand that kids are a blessing and I will take whatever I am able to get!

Keep me posted on your IUI treatments - let's hope you have a good news story soon :)

I'm so sorry to hear about your news.  And I'm also sorry you have to wait so long to get started, definitely put your name on a last-minute cancellation waiting list to see about getting in sooner!!  At least you have some sort of idea of how the Dr.'s want to proceed. Wishing you LOTS of luck and baby dust, sweetie!!

I never knew that about Jon and Kate.  I knew she has PCOS and they were undergoing fertility treatments, but I did not realize they went against Dr.'s orders and DTD and wound up with 6?!?!  CRAZY!!!

I know the feeling of wanting something now.  But one of the main things I've learned in this TTC journey is that nothing about it is in your control and I've had to really learn patience.  Easier said than done...but I'm trying! :)

I know...I read that and freaked out a little bit!  For this current IUI cycle, I released FIVE eggs and we did back to back IUI's with really good motile sperm counts.  So if I do get pregnant this cycle, I have everything crossed that it's with no.more.than.two!!!!!

Amy - Sorry your appt didn't go as planned I understand completely.

I guess every RE is different, but my doctor is kind of against JUST doing injectables.  He uses them with IUI and IVF.  His reasoning behind it is the risk of high sets of multiples.  I guess you will really have to wait and see if how he treats his patients.  Can you get on a wait list? My RE was booked way out in advance too, but I was lucky enough to get on a wait list and an opening came up.

Beatie - Fingers crossed you have at least one in there :)

Cat - Ya, I'm not sure what the RE's plan will be - but what I've been able to read since yesterday does say IUI with injectibles is MUCH better then just injectibles. The GYN just mentioned injectibles but I think she was just saying that clomid won't help me (in her opinion.. I guess I could get another opinion - from who I don't know!) so I need to go to the fertility clinic.

And yes, as soon as I get the clinic contact information I will be calling them to see about a wait/cancelation list. My GYN said the wait is 'under 6 months' so not sure what that means exactly. She said she would write the referral right away so I hope to hear something soon, if not - I will be calling them!

Thanks ladies for all your support - I haven't told any of my friends yet as I know they won't understand. I need to understand more first as they will have a million questions and I will just get frusterated if I don't have the answers. Good thing I have you guys :)
