My heart is breaking...

So DH and I are looking for a 3rd dog. We aren't 100% sure when we are gonna get one yet, but it will be sometime.

I came across this guy, and fell in love. He is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (exactly what we want) and he is only 7 weeks old. He's in Utah so we'd have to travel about 8 hours (not a problem). BUT he has a heart murmer (meaning he has mitral valve disease, a condition quite common in Cavaliers) and he could live to be 15 years... or only 2 years...

It breaks my heart, and I want him even more knowing he has this condition, but I know its a big step to take, adopting a dog I know may pass away at any moment... UGH

What would you do?

How sweet!!!

Well if it means more Vet bills I would have to think with my wallet and pass on the cute pup. But if he will not need many vet visits I think it would be worth it to have some time with him. Doctors have been wrong before so there is a good chance he will live a long life.

All of my pets are on health insurance plans, so the vet bill part wouldnt be too much of a burden. Unfortunately the condition is guaranteed, they can tell in this breed at 6 weeks with extensive testing. He wouldn't need any treatment for it however, because it is not curable... so we would just love him as much as possible and give him the best life we could while he was with us...

AWW.. love his sweet little heart, he is so dear. He is so freaking cute!!!!

If you have insurance plans then I would get him. I would give him the best life possible, my heart is breaking even looking at the pics.. but if it were me, I would get him and give him all the love that you and your DH have in your hearts. Best of luck.

OMG. . .

I'd adopt him. . .even with the heart murmur he deserves to be loved!  He is precious!

Definitely get him on an insurance plan though. . .you NEVER want to be a situation where you have to choose between the life of the dog and making the rent payment!

My 8 year old maltese was diagnosed with a heart murmur last year. She is on enalapril and it has helped her a lot. When she first went on the meds her heart rate was 180 and just being on the meds for 2 months her heart rate has dropped to 120. Heart murmurs are a lot more common than you think and many dogs go on undiagnosed. Its good that he has been diagnosed early on so you can get him on meds early. I would ask the vet about what meds there are to help him. He can live a very long life. You would never know Sugar has a heart murmur, shes as normal as can be. Good luck if you decide to adopt him!

After talking to a vet at my job, we've decided not to adopt the puppy. Unfortunately knowing his fate was out of my hands and that there is nothing I could ever do, would just kill me.

:( I hope he finds a good home

wow---HE IS SO PRECIOUS!  and those dogs are amazingly friendly and loving.  my inlaws have one.  we wanted one, but many breeders charge upwards of $3,000 for each one!

that's a tough decision.  i would say the hardest part for me was knowing goodbye was coming, but not when.  if you know your heart can take it, giving that dog a home is an amazing thing to do.

Jack has a heart murmer...we're not treating it with anything right now....but he would need more diagnostic ($$) tests if we needed to put him under, like for teeth cleaning...which, he's already had done twice...

Oh he's so cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I would be pretty tempted to get him!!!  But I understand the vet bills concern too.  Would you be rescuing/adopting him or buying from a breeder?

I have a Cav, too!  What grade is his murmer?  It kind of concerns me that he already has one, though, at such a young age.  Poor little sweetness.
