My Positive Induction Story!

know some of you have had horrible induction stories. I know some of you are completely against induction. Some of you are for it. And some of you are on the fence.

This is my story.

Let me preface by saying I pretty much had THE WORST pregnancy EVER. My body was NOT made to carry a baby. I suffered all day/night MS from week 6 until I gave birth. I experienced EVERY side effect of pregnancy. MS, constipation, hemrroids (sp?), weight loss, weight gain, hospitalization, threats of home healthcare, out of work on disability,... the list goes on. I thought my pregnancy would never end. Seriously the longest 10 months of my life!

I think we brought up the discussion of an induction a million times with my doctor. He's a real traditionalist, but also a realist. His stance was if it's medically necessary early, he would do it. If your body is ready (soft cervix, at least 1 cm dialated) by 39 wks, he'd do an elective induction.

At 38 wks I was only 1cm dialated and my cervix wasn't "favorable". At 39 wks, I was the same. But because I had a miserable pregnancy & I was measuring slightly small, my doctor agreed to an induction at 39 wks & 2 days.

I went in for an "induction briefing" on Monday. My doctor checked me again & I was still only 1 cm with an "unfavorable" cervix. He sat DH & I down & explained he'd still agree to do the induction if I wanted, but that I needed to know the potential outcomes. Those being 1. It works 2. It doesn't work, so we go home with no baby & wait for nature to run it's course 3. Go all out & do a c-section if it doesn't work.

I explained I wanted to go forward with the induction. I said that I believed my body just needed the little kickstart for labor. DH & I agreed that if the cervadil didn't work, we'd go home empty handed & wait for mother nature because obviously my body wasn't ready. I knew I was ready, LO was ready, & so was my body. I'd been having mild contractions since week 38, afterall.

So we went in on Monday night. Yes, last night! The nurse inserted cervadil at 8:45pm. By 11pm my contractions were 100 times stronger than the mild ones I'd been having. I was in some discomfort, but opted to tough it out. After not sleeping at all, I asked for something at 4:30am to help me sleep. I took a 1/2 dose of Ambien. I was then only able to sleep from 5:30am to 6:45am, between contractions and with the help of DH pushing on my lower back during contractions. My contractions were coming in 2s at this point. One incredibly strong, long one and one shorter, less strong one. My new nurse came in at 7:30am & introduced herself & explained that my doctor would be in at 8am the check my cervix & see how the cervadil worked.

At about 7:55am my doctor came in, examined me, and said "you're at a 2 and I can break your water if you want to move forward." I said "hell ya!" So he broke my water. Holy hell! The contractions came on like nothing I've ever felt in my life. I think at one point I was hanging from the ceiling or clawing at the walls. The nurse hooked up a Pitocin IV, but didn't start it. She said it was just in case because she felt i'd progress without it.

And sure enough.... I did! I was moving right along! The anesthesiologist (sp?) Came in around 9:30 to start my epi, but I kept having contractions so he had to wait. When he was about to do it, he got suddenly called away. Some other soon to be mom's placenta or something ruptured and if he didn't go right away her or the baby could die. The nurse gave me stayadol our something like that to hold me over until another anesthesiologist could be called up. Holy crap! That stuff made me loopy and didn't help with the pain! I just was in and out of this world for about an hr and a half until the other anesthesiologist showed up. He gave me my epi around 11am, but out only took to the right. I requested more cuz the contractions were burning my insides so bad. And then I was good to go.

The nurse checked me around 1 and said "Holy shit! Youre ready to go. Baby's head is right there!" But since I couldn't move my legs I had to wait for the epi to wear off a bit. That took about an hr and a half. My mom told the nurse and she came in at about 2:45 and had me pushing by 2:50. Once I was about to crown she called the doctor. I lost about 10 min of pushing, but that was ok. The break was nice even though I'd only pushed for about 15 min at that point. He came right over & I pushed a few more times. Then I hear DH say "that's a head!" When I wasn't even pushing & next thing I know I have a baby on my chest at 3:30pm. Yup! Only a 40 min labor for my first baby! It was awesome. Raleigh Grace came into this world at 3:30pm on 9/13 weighing 7lbs 4ozs and measuring 18 3/4 inches.

The nurse took LO to weigh & do the Apgar tests. MIL was right there, taking pictures! DH stayed by my side while the doctor fixed me up. LO got a 9 on her 1 min Apgar and a PERFECT 10 on her 5 min one! ! The nurse told me she rarely ever gives 10s, but LO has "just the right amount of chubs & pink" according to her.

My mom, DH, and MIL were there with me the whole way and I wouldn't ask for anything else in the world. They kept me comfortable, guided me when I needed it, and coached me through pushing. They also had me laughing through the pushing, which was awesome. I really needed that humor.

I can honestly say L&D wasn't THAT bad. Yes, I'm in horrible pain from tearing, but I have this perfect little person from that. She's been awesome from the minute I conceived! She's a fast learner and already has breastfeeding down. She's only cried 1 time because her diaper was dirty. She's been sleeping a lot, awake at odd hours, and just everything I could ever want!

And that's my story. Sorry it was so long & probably full of spelling errors because I typed most of it on my phone at like 3am. Also, sorry for no pics on here. Again, blame it on my phone. I did post a pic in the %+ group yesterday.

LOVE your story!! :)  I'm so glad you had a positive experience with induction (I did too) and are sharing it with everyone here!! :)  Congrats on that beautiful little baby girl!!  Her height/weight are SO close to what Kylie's were (she was 7lb 8oz and 18.5 inches), and she was a little chubster.  I LOVED it!! :)

I'm soooooooooo happy for you and your DH. It's great knowing that you had a positive induction story. I loved reading it and it gives me some sort of ease knowing that not all induction stories have to be horror stories. Congrats Mama! You did it! Can't wait to see her picture!

Yes, I was on the fence about bfing. I was only doing it cuz my mom and DH were pushing it. It still weirds me out a bit, but I know it's very healthy for me and LO, so I'm going to stick with it for a bit. And since she has been a champ at it that helps a lot!

YAY SHANDIPANTS!! Congratulations on being a new mommy. There is nothing better than holding that little person for the first time. There's no love like that. I loved reading your birth story! My birth was extra fast like that too and I also tore; NOT FUN but WELL worth it.
I'm so happy for you and I'm so proud of you. I can't wait to see your beautiful baby girl! Congrats again!
