It always varies but here’s my experience.  The procedure itself take no more than 10 minutes.  They have you lie down below an xray machine of some sorts and will insert a tube up the hooha filled with dye.  When they release the dye, it will feel like terrible menstrual cramps, and I mean terrible cramps.  I am usually good at holding pain in but I kept wincing at the pain.  But as soon as the procedure is over, the cramping stops.  For other ladies, the pain continues afterwards.  My doctor prescribed some antibiotics (CIPRO) for three days but my friend was just told to take any pain meds.  My friend also recommended having someone come with you, like your DH, in case the pain is that terrible.  I was able to go to work right afterwards but my friend was not and went straight home.  In any case, it doesn’t hurt to have someone come with you.  They might have a screen of the xray on the side so that you can see the dye.  My doc explains how to read it and you can tell if tubes are blocked or not or if there are any other issues.  Hope this helps.

ditto what dork said. :)
I am pretty tough so I did not take any pain killers before I went in (dr said I could and others recommended it) but there was a good 3-5 minutes where I was wincing and biting my lip and was cursing myself for not listening. I felt fine though as soon as the procedure was over but then I got cramps again a few hours later ( I seem to always have delayed reactions to things) but nothing that Aleve couldn't handle. I was also given antibiotics that they had me start taking before the procedure.
The weirdest thing that happened to me was that little spit ball looking things were coming out whenever I went to the bathroom.  Apparently it was tissue and dye and being forced out by the procedure. It is not a super common side effect so it shocked me because I hadn't read anything about that until after it happened and I googled it.
Good luck and let us know how it goes! :)

Artlvr: Yay for a plan! FX for you! I'm the outlier but when I had my HSG I took a couple of tylenol before and didn't have any pain during or after....so, it is possible! I went right back to work afterwards. Just remember to wear a pantyliner afterwards. The best part is that the test is fast and the results are instantaneous! Keep us posted!

Thanks for all your advise! I took advil an hour before and I thought I was going to either faint or throw up from being so nervous! It went good, the pain was sharp but for only a few minutes then it was all over. All Clear! Whoo! Glad to get some good news! Day 4 on provera; hopefully starting injections next week!

How are you all doing?
