Name change, What would you do?

So I finally received my wedding license so I can finally begin the process of changing my name, but I'm kind of torn on what to do with my maiden name. I know I want to take his last name, and while my last name is extremely common its still my name, the one I've identified with my whole life. I originally was going to drop it and use my maiden name as my pen name for my artwork. As an artist I felt this was appropriate because art and my name have been with me since I was born. Or I can add my maiden name as my second middle name so I don't loose it but simply use my first, real middle and new last name. Are there any problems with either option that I can't foresee? What would you do?

I dropped my maiden name.

You could just put your maiden name as your middle name. Thats what my SIL did.

I plan to drop my maiden name.  It's been 2 years since my marriage however I used to travel so much that I didn't change my license.  However my bank statements and such have my married name lol.  Once we move into our house in March I plan to change everything over to my married name.

At first I felt like you but I like when people refer to me as my married name lol.  For you as an artist keeping your maiden name may be beneficial so that people can still identify your work.  You can have your first, midlle, maiden and then married last name.

Yeah I wonder how my folks would feel about me keeping my maiden as a second middle name?

Will I have travel issues, I'm flying in the next 3 weeks for the first time so I don't know what to expect (so I know I can't change my name till then) but would I be able to begin my social security paper work now? Will that be an issue with travel. My goal is to be able to change my name before June so I can apply for a passport as soon as possible for a cruise over the summer. But I don't know if its doable you know? So I worry about these little details.

Also, it took me months to officially change everything over but when I finally got around to it I found the process at the SSN office and such really easy. Still haven't managed to change my name at my credit union after 2 years though, lol

Do whatever you most comfortable with. My maiden name is important to me and rather unique, so I chose to hyphenate. I have a friend who was so worried about this that her husband offered to also hyphenate his name, so that together they have truly formed a new family together! But most girls I know still take theirhusband's  name and there is nothing wrong with that.

I'm taking on my fiance's last name and dropping my maiden name. It is part of becoming his wife and part of the whole "two become one" thing. But that's just what I believe to do. I've seen other women hypeh it. It's up to how you feel about it (:

I was attached to my maiden name, but I knew I would drop it. It gave me monior anxiety for a while, so I know how you're feeling! It's a personal decision. It took me a while to get used to my new name, but I love it and I'm so happy. I really like the idea of using your maiden as a pen name!

That said, when it comes to travel, I would wait to change it after your trip in a few weeks. That could get messy, especially if everything is already booked. As for a passport, it only takes a few weeks, so you'll be fine for your trip later this year. I've been married for 2.5 years and the one thing I haven't changed is my passport--mostly because of the cost.I really don;t want to drop $140 on a name change! So when I travel out of the states, I book everything in my maiden name and haven't had a problem with that. Just don't accidentally book using your married name!

I didn't want to hyphenate it. I finally got to social security today and simply dropped my name. Decided that if I wasn't going to use my maiden as a second middle name on anything there was no point in keeping it. I'm no one different because I dropped my maiden. Still the same person. And I may use it as my pen name anyways. :)

I think its a good decision. You will be the same person its your art that define you.

Either way I think would be totally fine! I'm like you and didn't want to get rid of my maiden name completely. I actually don't have a middle name (my mom and aunt don't either) and decided to make my maiden name my middle name. I know in some states, you can't change your first or middle name due to marriage - but in Florida I am able to!
