Stones are how they measure weight in England. . .

5-6 stone is the U.S. equivalent of 60-80 pounds.

Welsh: I've got your back!  I bought a dress nearly three sizes too small myself.  It took me 4 months to zip it, and then it had to be taken in for my wedding, so you can do it!

Let say you want to lose 70 pounds. . .your goal is ambitious but not impossible.  You have to start yesterday if you want to do this the right/healthy way.  If you are counting pounds, it's healthy to lose between 1-2 pounds/week or no more than 8-10 pounds in a month.

With great success you can lose 80 pounds in 8 months, but that isn't healthy and doesn't happen often.

Start by tracking the food you eat!  Use www.sparkpeople.com or www.livestrong.com if you don't want to journal.

Find a workout that you enjoy!  Maybe it's walking after dinner and then slowly working your way into running.  Maybe you enjoy aerobics, or swimming?  For me it was yoga!  That will help you tone and lose inches.

Good luck!

hi its nice to know im not alone. you look beautiful in your dress hun. how much weight did you actually lose altogether hun and how long did it take you?

as for exercise i love the clare sweeney perfect fit dvd and walking. i have only just started though so im mega unfit. i have about 90 pounds to lose by 31st july next year but would probaly fit in my dress after 80 lost so i have a bit of leeway.

the only diet i tend to be able to keep to is weight watchers. i cant have dairy products though as im lactose intolerant so its soya for me.

i have a major adiction for pepsi max and chocolate which i need to overcome too. obviously im not suppose to have chocolate anyway so its important i sort it out.

any help greatly appreciated.

Welsh- you are definitely not alone!

I lost about 25 pounds to get into that dress and it had to be taken in at the top from a size 10 to a size 8.  I would have needed to order it in a 14-16 if I hadn't lost any weight. I started in January and had the dress taken in two weeks before our wedding.

How much too-small is your dress?

Ok, so I'm willing to bet that if you quit the Pepsi Max and Chocolate you'll lose a few pounds off the top super easy.  Don't think of it as quitting, maybe start by rationing yourself to one can per day, then down to one per week, etc.

Chocolate is actually good for you!  Switch from sugary milk-chocolate and candy bars to a rich dark chocolate. . .make it a treat for yourself at the end of the day if you didn't blow your diet earlier, and enjoy one piece of it SLOWLY.

Make yourself a daily menu that looks something like this.  You are going for a balance of high-fiber, protein, and whole-grain carbohydrates.  Eat every 2 hours!  It keeps your metabolism up. . .and the fiber (veggies, fruits, and whole grains) keep you full:

Breakfast: Whole Grain English muffin toasted (Thomas has 100 calorie ones) with either 1 TBS natural peanut butter OR some lean turkey and a small egg.  (key here is whole grain + protein)

*snack* Have an apple and some almonds, or a handful of grapes with a small amount of a soft soy-based cheese.

Lunch: a stir-fry of chicken and veggies with light seasoning (think 1 tsp of soy sauce or fish sauce with garlic, lemon, etc.)

*snack* A small, plain soy latte (I'm not kidding!)

Dinner: Divide your plate in 1/2.  Fill one half with veggies (salad, steamed brocolli, etc.). Split the other half of your plate between a small piece of protein (lean beef, chicken, tofu, salmon) and a whole grain (brown rice, etc.)

*snack* here is where that chocolate comes in!

I didn't use weight watchers and followed a menu like the one above.  The weight came off pretty easily, you can do it!  Take tempting foods out of your house, and identify the triggers that get you in trouble (for me it's driving!  I love to eat when I drive. . .)

my dress is a 12 and im a 22 so its very much too small but it only cost me 72 british pounds custom made so isnt really a big loss but i really want to get into it.

i am going to be very honest.  you are going to have to do a lot of work to get into the size 12 if you are a size 22 right now.  this means that you are going to have to watch what you eat and exercise HARD CORE.  i would take away all junkfood from your househould and refrain from buying any junkfood.  i would drink tons of water and eat lots of salad, fruits and veggies.  carbs is not your friend right now.  exercise any chance you get.  park your car far that way you have to walk, climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator and workout for about an hour and a half per day.  do lots of cardio and if possible see if you can talk to a personal trainer regarding your goal.  you can do it but it is going to take a lot of hard work!  Good luck.

Welsh - that is ambitious girl!

If I were you, I'd keep up the good work. . .wean yourself off of the junk and see what happens (you will lose weight just getting of the pop and munchies!).  Give yourself until December and see where you are at. . .make a goal.

Say, in December you should be 1/2 way to that size 12. . .and if you are not, that's still plenty of time to order another dress before your wedding!

Lets say you're almost halfway, but not sure you can make it. . .maybe then order a 16.

So, get moving and see what happens, and don't make a 'dress' decision just yet.  It's definitely do-able, just ambitious is all!

The biggest advice I can give you on this is that you need to do it as a lifestyle change too!  Don't just starve yourself into a size 12. . .do it the slow, healthy way, and commit to being thinner so you don't gain it all back after the wedding.

Stick around here, we'll help you!

Welsh,

Ambitious but not impossible however please see your doctor once you have a plan in place and make sure he/she oversees you.

The headaches you experienced are likely sugar / caffeine withdrawals and should pass in a couple of days but again -- ask your doctor.

Now, here are things that will help you shed quickly.  I'm down 24lbs in just over 4 mos (and am almost three sizes smaller than I was on May 1st of this year).    You need to lose 6 sizes and you have 10 months, so I believe you can do it!

Here is what I have done:

-cut out sweets and fast / junk food, almost entirely.  I indulge maybe 1 - 2 mo, I don't plan it but when I do indulge, I MUST eat very light AND work out the next day  - it's a give and take

-drink a LOT of water - I average 100oz a day.  I gave up dark colas almost entirely and drink "water equivalent" (clear, caffeine, calorie and sugar free soda / flavored sparkling water, crystal light, etc.).  Green tea is also good and is said to promote weight loss.

-eat only good carbs:  double fiber whole grain bread, whole grain wraps, whole grain cereal and brown rice.  These are very beneficial to weight loss when eaten in moderation.

-NO carbs after lunch.  None.  I have wavered on this recently and think it's a reason why my loss has slowed down over the past couple of weeks.

-work out 4 - 5x/week:  I do a water aerobics class, a bellydancing class, and then 3x a week I do weight training and 30 minutes of cardio (elliptical machine).  However after whining to my trainer about my weight loss slowing down he's asked me to do 45 minutes of cardio per session when I do weight training (waaah!)  ;)

Working out will make you hungry but don't let that trap you -- eat only healthy foods after a workout -- I'll have a light string cheese or a cup of applesauce.

You can do it!!!! Keep us posted on your progress.   :)

Thanks ladies i really appreciate your support! i have made an appointment with my doc for a plan to wean me off the pop and choccy slowly to avoid headaches. i think its just the headaches that are hindering the diet at the mo, once i can put a stop them the diet will be a lot easier.

im glad i got a few diet buddies lol that alone ill make it easier.

thankyou for the warm welcome everyone!!
