NTTCR: So worried and sad...:(

Lovelies,

I'm a fur mama of a sweet 2 years old black Lab, Zac. DH & I love him as a child (I know it sounds crazy!).

When he was 6 months old, we noticed he was limping. We saw the vet and she couldn't see anything anormal so she prescribed anti-inflammatory and a couple days later everything was fine. At this time, she thought it could be muscular since it happened right after we did some exercices with him. In the last year and a half, it happened again (maybe 4 times) and she checked him again, gave anti-inflammatory and the pain went away the day after.

Two weeks ago, Zac started limping again. This time, even thought we put him to rest, the pain stayed. So today, he had X-rays and the vet just called me back: Cruciate Ligament injury...:'(.... I don't know exactly what it does imply (we meet with the vet at 17h00) but she talked about an operation. I made the mistake to look at the Internet and it totally scared me. Seems like the rate of success for this operation isn't really high with big dog, especially if they can't stay still afterward (Zac is always jumping all over the place...he's still a baby!).  And if we don't go with the operation, it says he'll develop osteoarthritis and we'll be in pain (which will probably affect he's lifespan too).

So please, just have a little thought for us that everything will be fine for our furbaby...

And Claire, I know you KNOW so many things about dogs...so if you have anything to say on this, I would really appreciate your opinion on treatments and pronostic.

xx

Oh honey, big hugs to you and Zac xx

It's horrible when a child is sick, but at least you can get an idea of what hurts even before they can talk but poor fur-babies can't tell you anything. Hope everything works out xx

I have Advanced Osteoarthritis and it BITES!!! The pain has been so bad that I felt like taking a chain saw to my leg. I know this sounds extreme, but you have no idea what that pain is like.

The surgery has failed me TWICE so far. I have given up on it.

I have a ton of experience with CCL tears as I am a dog trainer and am involved in competitive obedience.

TPLO has a higher success rate than other surgeries, but you do have to be very careful during the rehab period. I have seen competitive obedience and agility dogs go on to full, successful careers after having TPLO. PM me if you have questions!

Hugs and kisses to your fur baby!

Awe our black lab had a luxating patella, basically her knee cap didnt stay in place, she's had 2 surgeries on her knee and is finally doing better but mostly because we finally got her weight down.  The surgeries weren't overly successful and cost us a lot of money.  BUT we love her and would have done the surgeries probably no matter what.  The crazy things we do for our furkids!
