NWR Animal Advice

Its a few weeks before the wedding and I've got things to do for that but my ultimate headache is the horse thing. I love my present horse, he's flashy, jumps clean, a 10 all around, just gorgeous and he was my first gift from FI, before the ring. I sold my others before joining FI in the military and now I think I need to sell him and quit horses altogether. Its not the money, although it is a lot more than I would like. Its the lies, the cheating, the underhanded stupidity! These military towns charge an arm and a leg because they can take advantage of us. In the end its really the people, they're awful. EVERY barn I've boarded with for the past year, moving around this country in "Service" has tried to take advantage of me and fleece me. I don't know if its the military thing or what but I'm tired of this extortion! At our latest barn, the manager is MAKING MY HORSE ILL and then pushing the "solutions" onto me at her price! I just want people to feed, turn out and leave me alone - I should be the easiest client because I'm not asking much here. And I feel like at just under a grand a month, its a little too much to be paying to get ADDED stress. And on top of trying to swindle me, she's really really really rude. Nevermind that I brought her my business and TWO other military people! That's around $2800 a month added income! I love my horse to bits but I'm SO frustrated with this low life scum always trying to take me for a ride... I mean I'm not stupid, I've been in the game a long time and almost went pro (except I'm getting married so that life went out the window) so its really really annoying and rude. And what makes it worse is I really do think that once they hear military, they try and do it even more since they know the government is good for the money, except HELLO no one in their right mind goes into the military for money. These people are stressing me out, driving me nuts and generally making me want to cry all the time... er or curse profanities at the top of my lungs... What to do?! And worse, the market is not one for selling horses now so even if I said, "okay, I give up, I'm selling him." I may not even be able to find a buyer.... BAH! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO A MILITARY DISCOUNT?!?! just kidding, but seriously who tries to swindle people in service?! Its been several different people already in the past year!

Can you maybe board him some place else for awhile (away from the military town) until you're in a place that has better facilities nearby? One of my friends has a horse and she made the decision of boarding hers a bit farther away than she'd like but the accomodation was a lot cheaper and the horse actually has a lot more space.

It would at lease buy you time to make a decision and maybe the market will get better.

First, i must say... keep your horse! I think you will regret selling him, i mean you love him he's a part of your family now. The stress is high today, the wedding is nearing and all that comes w/ it. Once the big day has come and gone you will look forward to riding and relaxing w/ your horse.  I would channel your negativity energy about your horse's conditions and the horrible people in the equation into finding him a new home (diff stable or barn) take desperate measures and try every avenue. But from one animal lover (some people say obsessed) to another (it seems) please dont sell your horse.  Look forward to your day and try and weather this storm right now.... i love,"this too shall pass" and it will and when it has... you and your horse will have each other and by then your dh too!

I would like to but I would have to board him in a place where I would never be able to see him, in which case I would rather just call a trainer and offer them a fee to sell him for me. He's not the kind of horse that can sit without riding otherwise I would send him to my family's place to just sit and eat... My family doesn't want a horse like him, he's quite hot/athletic/requires attention... We thought about that but our family doesn't really like to work horses like him so he would not get the attention he deserves in his prime of life... ahh I feel like I have no options but then I feel badly trying to sell my first gift from FI, I thought I would keep him forever and just move him around with us but these people... oy vey they really really really are terrible!

I had horses growing up and I never boarded mine we always had enough property to have them at home. I can't imagine the stress! I've riden at several stables where horses were boarded and it must be tough having to deal with people who aren't treating you right. Maybe you can look around for another stable or even a person who already owns horses that would rent a stall out to you? Don't sell your horse you'll regret it. It's not his fault.

Could you send him to your parents' and maybe lease him out to an experienced rider who would be able to work with him regularly?  If I had the time and money I'd buy him from you in a heartbeat and leave you the option to buy him back when you're in a better location, but unfortunately I don't get much of a chance to ride anymore.  Poor horsey.  :(  Have you asked your local vet/farrier if they can recommend somewhere else for boarding?  Maybe an individual who doesn't necessarily own a commercial stable but has the space for one more horse and would like to make a little extra money?

thanks ladies for listening :) I love pw

I'm trying to go to a show this weekend and find all the barns in the area, its a pretty big show so I think its mostly out of towners but fingers crossed. I just spoke with another person who has been boarding for a year and the rabbit hole is much deeper than I thought. They really do swindle people, we've just missed some of the most recent examples but I'm sure another will come up soon. I'm trying to find a small backyard place even but I went to look at one and she wanted to charge me $650 a month for a tiny tiny property with no real riding space... haha not when I can buy the same property myself with the house et al for $150,000.... its just absurd, there is no supply so they're trying to swindle people... most of the barns sold out in the real estate boom to become suburban developments. Grrrr I also realized I pay as much for board in the continental US now as a nice nice barn in Hawaii which has to FLY the hay in and obviously has higher property values. I mean seriously now... I wish we weren't military sometimes and could just say "screw this city" and move!

hbrogan, I'm thinking of doing that not, selling him with a clause in the contract that if they decide to put him back on the market they have to call me first. I also asked some trainer friends to keep a lookout on lease options in their regions/barns... but oof, these people are so shady they should not be allowed to operate!
