NWR Dealing with apt management?

I have never lived in a managed condo/apt complex before. I have only lived in co-ops or privately owned buildings in NY where the "manager/owner" was never around or very polite/minded their business. And I have only ever rented in Manhattan. I'm pulling my hair out trying to deal with the full time management staff around here.

Its the middle of nowhere firstly and by my humble opinion, despite being the "nicest" near the military base, its a total dump. Whatever its only for a few more months until we are re-stationed. Its funny because Kerry, McCain and Bush I were stationed here but I can't picture them living in this crappy place!! I'm going nuts because this apt complex treats tenants like they are in boarding school! They also seem to believe this is the Ritz... I can't even tell you how many times they have screamed, yes screamed, at me over inane things like:
1.Putting a Ron Paul sign in my window (half the complex is military so half the complex had them up too. Yes, we all were screamed at...)
2. Pulling up my blinds so I could see out of my window - yes that is against the rules, they must all appear to have the blinds down.
3. Putting potted flowers outside my front door - it clashes with their landscaping to have my flowering jasmine and tea roses apparently...

Yes they literally do scream at you! You would think with all the badgering that I live at 740 Park Ave or something, goodness! I was just yelled at again this morning for letting my wet wellies sit at my front door overnight to dry... And this isn't even to mention that they do enter our apt without previous notice or requests which is technically against the law. I've counted several times now they've entered without our permission - once the maintenance guy tried to walk in while I was in the shower, I had to jump out and PUSH the door shut in his face and say, "Please don't bother, we don't need anything" and lock it. Its to the point where I'm paranoid they are sniffing around and stealing things so I hate leaving the house! I've complained but it does zero good.

I'm so flustered with these people - its unreal! Okay thanks, I just had to vent at the absurdity.

can you change the locks to start? I had an apartment manager enter my unit without permission while I was in the bathroom and I let him have it. I also reported him to the owner. Turns out he was behaving inappropriately with most (the young, single) women in the building and we ultimately got him fired.

is the complex on military property or just nearby? if it is on the complex, I fear you can't do much. If it's not than contact the city and find out what your rights are. In the building I just mentioned, the residents got together to contact the city to find out what our rights were. I organized a meeting with a representative of the housing board of the city to come out and tell us our rights and the laws. (note: when the owner found out, he policed things much more closely so it was effective on many levels)

That's a good point - getting the city involved may help "clear up" the matter. I don't know if the absurd yelling is just cause for the city to be involved but surely the unwanted entering of the unit must be...

they might not have the right to tell you what you have posted in your windows either or left on your doorstep. You might find out there are ordinances for those things (some cities have those rules) and if there are no city rules, than you can tell them to back off!

I feel like its so silly, esp about my flowers - its not like flowers are usually bad thing! Most areas would prefer that you garden and keep things aesthetically pleasing!

I agree that you need to talk to the owner and the city. A lot of the times, the full time management is acting without the knowledge of the owner. Is there a list of rules that we signed as part of your lease? All community rules must also be initialled when a lease is signed (at least in CA) and all new rules must be put out in writing. I know that a lot of places have rules about what can go up in the windows, but I would be amazed that the rule truly is that you can't raise your blinds. It sounds like your manager is on a power trip.
