NWR: Do You Have Irrational/Paranoid Fears?

I have 4..

#1...every since FI got robbed at gunpoint TWICE a few years ago...I fear it happening again and the robber actually pulling the trigger...although we moved out of that area and it's been years, I am still fearful of it.

#2...I have a big fear of driving...I don't know why, I've never been in an accident or anything, but just the thought of me driving sends me into a panic.  I passed my drivers ed class in High school by buying my teacher a bucket of KFC chicken because I didn't want to have no parts of learning :/  I can say I am a little better, because years ago, I would have panic attacks just being in a car with someone else driving, I would not sit in the front seat and I was very selective of who I got in a car with.  Now, I am comfortable with being a passenger...every now and then if we are on the highway, that anxiety creeps up.  I want to learn...and every year I say "this is my year to learn how to drive"...but the anxiety and fear always wins.

#3..Something happening to me before my kids are old enough to take care of themselves.  I know FI would take great care of them, but it's nothing like their mother taking care of them.

#4..this is just weird...I cannot watch any kind of crime shows at night!!!  I dvr them and watch them in the daytime...because I am convinced that if I watch the show at night, the criminals that are portrayed in the show, will come and get me...so lame, lol!!!

I have an insanely irrational fear of heights. I have panic attacks on ski lifts (The bar has to be down), and an insane fear of flying (I have to take Xanex to knock me out)... but I've been para sailing and sky diving. Explain that??!?!?

You just reminded me...I forgot...I have a real fear of flying!!  I cry, I shake...everything.  I had to force myself to fly to Chicago last year and I was sooooooo scared...a complete stranger sat beside me on the flight and held my hand and talked me through to the layover stop...and then she had to leave...and I took the rest of the flight alone...I was praying the whole way.  And then of course when I was due to fly back to Philly, there was bad weather and it just sent my nerves into overdrive...but I survived!!!

I am going to have to fly again in the next 3 months, back to Chicago...and I am not looking forward to it!

Oh... oh yes.

  • Aliens. But I know that rationally, they aren't here. Or anywhere near here.

  • Spiders. But I refuse to admit it's irrational because they can kill people.

  • Cleaning or doing anything behind a fridge, under cabinets, etc. Those "never see them" places because I imagine there's something that wants to eat me.

  • Toilets in the process of flushing.

  • Someone breaking into my house. Especially because when DH is in school I spend a lot of time alone. I have a little .38 but I worry about not being able to get to it in time, etc. I say it's a little irrational, because we live in that "leave your doors unlocked" world.

  • Getting raped? Does that count?

I am terrrified of heights!!! I'm like you mwalch I have a huge panic on ski lifts and have to have the bar down.  However I'm not scared of flying (weird) but I get scared when I'm hiking up too high (I think I'm more terrified of falling) Chances I'm the same way you are with crime shows at night, can't watch them I have a fear they will come get me too...crazy right?  I hate crowds too, don't know why but I always feel like they might push me over and I won't be able to get back up.

I swear I have a laundry list!

- I also hate flying

-I am horrible with heights. If I am in a 2+ story mall I feel weak in the knees- something about being able to see the bottom floor and the ceiling wigs me out! I also can't do stadiums.

-Aliens, ghosts, anything supernatural.

-I have a serious fear of being kidnapped, like to the point where I look over my shoulder all the time, and check the door to see if it is locked multiple times, etc. (A little back story with this one- when I was younger multiple girls my age were kidnapped from my hometown so I am pretty sure thats where this stems from)

-I have a serious fear of public speaking. To the point where I feel like I am going to give myself a heart attack.

@chances - one flight, the person who sat next to me held my hand and prayed with me while we were landing cause I was having an anxiety attack. It didn't help that it was a little prop chop. And when I flew home from St Thomas USVI - the pilot announced that we needed to bring children to the front of the plane and adults in the back so we could take off! WHAT?!?!

Since we got broken into and our things stolen twice in one year in two different countries I'm convinced it will absolutely happen again. Irreplaceable jewelry was taken, including things my dad gave my mum during their wedding that she had bestowed to me. I've been traumatised by it. I hide the few bits of jewelry I have left in strange places whenever I leave the house, and it's so annoying when I don't remember where I put them!!

I'm terrified we'll get sick. Really ill.

Tornadoes.  I have always been petrified of being in a tornado!  As a result thunderstorms are pretty terrifying for me.

Spiders.  I've been bitten by one and had to miss almost a week of work due to swelling and reactions to the antibiotics I was on.  Ever since, I can't stand the sight of the creepy things!

Bats.  Seriously, they freak me out!

Home invasions...I watched a dateline special about a horrible one in Wichita a few years ago and think of it often.  Even though I'm prepared for it doesn't make me any less scared when I'm alone at night.

Flying...I never used to have a problem with this and used to travel quite a bit but the last two trips I went on were incredibly rough and I can't get certain crashes out of my head.

I also don't like driving because I panic. I got my license at 21 and haven't really driven much since (just turned 25).

I always make sure things are locked in the house and I sleep with knives because we've been robbed (I was 14), had our truck stolen out of our driveway (I was 16), and a fast food restaurant was robbed at gun point while we were there (I was 7).

I'm always looking over my shoulder to make sure no one "suspicious" is following due to having 2 stalkers.

Whenever I go somewhere I always look for an "escape route" just in case.

I hate not having blinds or curtains covering windows at night. I don't like to look outside and no knowing whats out there.

I have anxiety so most of my fears are very irrational (the ones I listed don't count). But, a lot of the fears mentioned here are pretty common so I don't see them as irrational at all.

Water. For no reason at all. When I was young, my family and I used to go boating all the time. But I'm not a very strong swimmer and now that I have children I'm scared to death of water. My kids also outnumber me so I freak out thinking IF something happened what if I had to CHOSE one? It's the worst thought in the world. Literally.

So I steer very clear of water with my kids, I won't even drive across the bridge with them in the car in case something happens.

So that. Oh, and major natural disasters, like tornadoes, earthquakes, and such. Mostly for the same reason above.

I swear I was fearless before kids LOL.

Snakes:  I had one crawl over my leg once while I was suntanning outside.  Then a boy chased me with one.  I start shaking and get tears when I see them even in a cage!

Definitely snakes...and does it count if something makes me irrationally sick?  Literally even the thought of chalk makes me gag...ick. I'm a school teacher, and I can't even have it out for the kids to play with, it literally makes my eyes water and I start to gag.  Sick.

  • Spiders - Seriously, no matter what size they are, in my mind they are a 8 ft ninja assassin hell bent on killing me.

  • Clowns - So...funny story. When my mom was pregnant with me, a friend gave her a clown doll with a rotating face. One sad, one happy. It was to help gauge her moods when they came in. Well, I had grown up seeing this thing sitting on the top shelf of my mom's closet, but when I was 4, the damn thing fell over and the face changed. I saw that and became convinced it was alive and out to get us. Ever since, been terrified of them. I even had a clown walk up to me at a fair one time, I climbed over about 3 complete strangers trying to get away from it.

  • Even though my son is nearing 6, I still have to go check on him in the night, because aparently my mommy brain never got over the SIDS thing.

  • I am terrified of my son being kidnapped, I was nearly kidnapped as a child, so the thought just makes me physically ill.

I think that's about it as far as irrational fears....probably not though...lol

I saw a few of mine posted here, and was suprised!

- Aliens. Not so much a fear of them, more of a fear of what they could do. On the flipside of this, I also get irrevocably & irrationally angry when I hear people deny their existance. I have no idea why since I'm usually a very believe what you believe, it's all honkeydorey type of person. Lol.

- Spiders! Just had my hubby kill a teeny tiny one in the bathroom thirty minutes ago. They will send me in to a screaming, can't breathe, omg fit. I can't even squash one, and have even went so far as to spray ( from behind a table ) one to death with Windex. It was definitely a feat.

- Paranoid fear = I have to say I love you at the end of EVERY conversation with the people I'm close to. This stems from my Mom & sister both having passed away, I think. I imagine that if I don't say it, something terrible will happen, and the last words from me they'll remember is "go pick up the groceries" or something.

- Church. Compounds. Hate them, hate them, hate them.
