NWR: Gel nail polish

I never get a mani but we leave for our babymoon on Friday and SIL got me a gift certificate that I've been saving. I'm wondering if gel polish is worth it?? Does it ruin your nails? and you have to have it taken off a special way right?

It actually depends on wether it's a gel or shalaq.  Often times most places say it's the gel when in fact it's shalaq.  If it's the gel than it's definitely worth it since it protects your nails from chipping and extends the look of your manicure.  Usually the cost upgrade for this is $5 total depending on your location.

If it's shalaq, in my opinion it's still worth it.  I get this for my pedicure. It's $15 more but I only go every other month.  I love it but it depends on the person.  This process has to be applied and removed a certain way.  Neither is painful it's just more time consuming than a regular manicure/pedicure.  Also the removal of the shalaq does not affect the appearance of your nail.  They remove it and can apply regular color, etc.

Either way I say there both worth it.

I hope this helps.

Yes, definitely worth it! I didn't know the difference between gel/shellac...but I think i've had both done before, and it definitely lasts up to 2-3 weeks! I'm a cheapskate and don't like to go there to get it removed, so I soak my nails in acetone at home to remove it. (definitely more time consuming than taking off regular polish, but it works). It doesn't ruin your nails. Go for it!!

I had gel for our honeymoon and it was totally worth it as they really lasted and looked great the whole time!  However, they did weaken my nails a little.  Like Uhlease, I just used acetone to remove them at home because I couldn't justify the spend on getting them removed professionally!  I found that creaming my nails helped strengthen them again though :)

I've never done gel but I do shellac regularly and I love it! I'm notorious for chipping my polish but when I get shellac it easily lasts 3 weeks at least! I never go in to have it removed unless I'm having it reapplied immediately, because all they do in the salon is soak your hands in acetone...you can do the same thing at home for way cheap. Just remember to coat your cuticles in olive oil first to avoid drying out!

If you do shellac repeatedly with no break it can definitely thin your nails out, but a one time applicaiton for a few weeks every now and then won't hurt them at all. The main thing is to moisturize like crazy after you get them off so your hands and nails don't dry out.

Good tip Sam, I was wondering why my cuticles always look so dried out on my toes.  I would remove the shellac myself but I don't think they would charge any less but I can ask.  I think I will switch off to regular polish now and then too.
