NWR: How many xmas presents do you buy for your kids? Or how many did you get as a kid?

Hello my PW lovely ladies!! I have missed you!!

My DH and I were talking about xmas the other day (it's 130 days away). We have been trying to decide on how many xmas gifts to give each of our kids and it's harder than I thought. We want to have a set number of gifts every year from here on out. We have been going and forth with numbers for days. I thought that I would ask here and see what you all had to say since you are some wise ladies.  :)

Last year I went overboard. I admit it. We have three kids and they each had 27 presents under the tree plus their stockings. Half way through opening their gifts their eyes were glazed over and I think that they lost interest. I want to strike the perfect balance between being excited for xmas and also being excited to be with your family and appreciating what you have and how blessed you are.

If you want to share: How many presents do you buy for your kids at xmas? Or if you don't have kids, how many presents did you get as a kid?

Also if anyone has any ideas on things they do as a family at xmas I'd love to hear them!

My boys have just turned 6 and we set a price limit, not a gift limit.

Last Christmas we spent around $250 on each of them, it worked out as 2 big Lego sets, a few books and a stocking.  By the time they'd opened all the little bits in their stockings they were ready for a break so we had breakfast and Skyped their grandparents in England before they opened their 'proper' gifts.

We are very conscious of over-doing it as we want them to focus on enjoying the time with family rather than what stuff they get (although I could easily bankrupt us if I didn't stay focused!!! Lol)

Usually we do, an outfit including shoes, a book/CD's/movies/video games, and then something BIG like stereo, ipod, cell phone, video game machine etc, also a couple  of small things like my daughter usually wants jewlery etc....but we always make sure that they all have the same number of gifts usually about 8-10.

We don't have kids yet...but when I was a kid, my parents would have one big present 'from santa' that we would get  set out by the fire place, and then under the tree we probably had maybe 10 more each, ranging from small to medium things (clothes, books, movies, etc, kind of liek Zuester said)

I know DH's parents give way more gifts because we're adults now, and my MIL still buys us a lot of gifts for us for christmas. It actually makes me feel bad because now it's more about being with family at this point and we don't really need anything...but it's just how she is.

27 presents I think it's a lot even for an adult to open. As you said, make it fun not painful! I think a big gift + a few other small gifts should do it..

Thank you for the input ladies!  :)

I think that one large gift and a few smaller gifts to open up is fine too. DH never really got much for xmas when he was little so he wants to make sure that the kids have a nice xmas each year. And I love to buy presents and it's hard for me to say "no more" to myself when I'm shopping for the kids.

Last year was definitely too much though. This year I want to incorporate lots of other family things into xmas not just gifts.  :)

We did a cookie exchange with a few of the boy's Kindergarden buddies. It was very cute seeing all the child-decorated gingerbread men etc.  They also made Christmas cards for all their relatives that live in England - the grandparents were very happy!!

It definitely took the focus off of gifts (at least for a little while anyway!!)

Oh the cookie exchange sounds cute!

I normally do around ten gifts for each child. In past years I have gone over that amount but not by much. I set a budget and then make sure that they each get the same number and quality of gifts.

Every year I have the kids make "reindeer food" and we sprinkle it outside on Christmas Eve. The kids help decorate the Christmas tree and put up the lights outside. We also bake cookies and drive around and look at the houses on the Christmas Lights Tour that the newspaper runs every year. We've also been able to go to a few Light Parades that our fire department does sometimes. Last year the weather was too bad for them to have one but they usually have it.

@Canooknic- Thanks!  LOL

We do lots of simple things around the holidays with the kids but I think that they enjoy it.
