Outdoor ceremony- alternative to arch

We're having our wedding outdoors on the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta...I really don't like the look of arches and can't afford a really nice looking arbor...any ideas or suggestions on something we can have up there?

-maybe using pomanders or even petals to outline a half-circle on the lawn ---> denoting where the "altar space" will be

-using shephered's hooks - hanging some mason jars with flowers in them

-renting or buying columns and placing flower arrangements on them

=========================

here's how one couple used what was already there and decorated it:
maybe using pomanders or photo 138994-1

this is kinda what i was talkin about by renting columns os "something" for altar flowers:
maybe using pomanders or photo 138994-2

check out pinkgerbers' bio - she reused her arbor floral decor on her sweetheart table!

that's another money saver - re-use your florals from the ceremony

Here's a bio I put together with various arches, canopies and gazebos:

http://community.theknot.com/cs/ks/user/page.aspx?username=archbio

In your case, you don't want an arch...how about some potted trees, urns or topiaries with flowers or shepherd hooks with pomanders, lanterns or hanging arrangements.  Or how about a beautiful umbrella...decorated with hanging beads/crystals or flowers?  Or, if there's a tree that you can use as your "altar" hang flowers/ribbon/lanterns/chandeliers from it to make it special.

Here s a bio photo 139006-1

I love this idea...a beautifully draped table to "mark the spot"...simple and elegant:

Here s a bio photo 139006-2

Personally, I didn't feel I could improve on mother nature, so we skipped the arch altogether and just went with the gorgeous backdrop of the pacific ocean in Hawaii.  Budget-friendly and awe-inspiring!

Here are some more pics:

So many great ideas...I think I had the ugly plain white arch in mind that I always see, but some of these are so gorgeous...definitely making me think more creatively!

Awesome ladies- I'm so glad I found pw!

You can completely cover the plain arch.  This one is a little too much IMO with the flowers on the side too, but I love the idea of draping the fabric to make it more flowy! You can completely cover photo 139209-1

What about just hanging twinkle lights or lanterns, etc. in a tree.  Or, like Lori said, you may not want to block out the view of the beautiful river.

Yay I found it! I looked through a LOT of threads lol

Yay I found it photo 139539-1

I love the look of the extremely large cylinder vases with colored water and submerged flowers so I am trying to incorporate it up by the alter somehow...

I also found these. Very reasonably priced and would make a great little addition to the arch/aisle decor

http://www.abcdistributing.com/home/catalog/cat_item_pg.asp?G=569&P=370&Rec=1&Ntt=topary&N=35&Nao=0&R=442454-5D22ROS2

ok well the link wont work...as usual so if you search for topary they have the regular ones but also the pink rose ones :)

I also found these photo 139540-1Heres a picture kinda lol

These have given me such great ideas- I think I'm going to do more of a grape-vine covered arch in more of a squared shape or look about hanging things in the trees...fantastic ideas ladies!
