Palace at Somerset, NJ

Hey all....I am new to project wedding and these forums...but it looks like you guys have an amazing thing here!!!!  You all seem so close or like you know each other so personally....I don't know how well I'll do with posting things but I hope I can be included...So I guess my first question is has anyone done or been to a wedding at the Palace in Somerset Park, NJ??? Its beautiful but a tad over my budget and since I can't find something else I'm in love with I was going to change the date and do a Sunday instead just wanted to know if its worth it....I've heard from people its good and from others its bad...I'm just worried all that money would be such a waste if its not so good....my wedding is next summer sometime so I REALLY need to fin d aplace...and I've been looking the past 6 months and haven't found anythin yet....Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Welcome!

My wedding is on a Sunday, and we saved some money (not only with the reception location, but with other vendors as well!)  The negatives of a Sunday wedding is people tend to leave earlier (although not a problem if its earlier) or may drink less, etc haha since they have to work the next day..

I on the other hand will be getting married this August 31st- the next day is labor day- so most everyone has it off, therefore it wasn't as big of a problem, you know?

Just an idea...

Depending on who your inviting/ how many people will give you a better idea, most of your closest friends/ family will celebrate with you regardless what day it is!

Happy planning!

- HMM :)

I live in southern NJ! But I'm planning a destination wedding at Biltmore Estate in NC!

I don't know what areas of NJ you are limiting your search to but I know of a few places that are wonderful for weddings:

The Mansion on Main Street in Voorhees: http://www.mansiononmainstreet.com/

The Smithville Inn in Smithville: http://www.smithvilleinn.com/

The Ram's Head Inn in Galloway: http://www.ramsheadinn.com/

The Carriage House in Galloway: http://www.the-carriagehouse.com/

Renalt Winery in Egg Harbor (excellent food & atmosphere): http://www.renaultwinery.com/

And of course, there are a ton of places in Cape May!

Welcome mhanna!  I'm in NJ but haven't been to the Palace.  I looked at their website and it looks beautiful!  I think that with any place, there will be some bad reviews.  No one place can please everyone.  As long as there are more good reviews than bad!  Having said that, I think you should schedule a food tasting....that should help you decide and most places will hold the date for you if you schedule a food tasting.

I say, go with your gut.  If your gut tells you the place is great, then believe it!  But if there a tiny voice inside or something that you experienced in visiting the place and talking with their staff that is making you second guess the location, run!

Good luck!

So if that's what you want, then go for it! All weddings there have been so elegant and beautiful! I wold definitley do it on Sunday to save some money!

Thank you all good tips and ideas....I appreciate it!!! I'm trying to stay in central or Northern Jersey Jessie only because  I live in Central and my FI lives in Northern most guests are from Northern Jersey so we don't want them traveling too much...The good thing is I am felxible on the church so if we find a nice one avaiable closer to the hall we'll book that one...our church is too old and plain.

Do you mind me asking how much the Place in Somerset costs for a Sunday??

ummm no not at all they tell you when you call $145 per person before tax and service I think it was....so all inclusive it would be...$186.18 but they'll work with you...cause I know I'm not willing to spend that much for a guest list of minimum 200 maximum 250 guests....and I haven't sat down to hatch out the details with them yet...but I am looking at The Mezzanine in Newark this Saturday we'll see how that goes.

Yeah, that is WAY out of my price range....

Let me know about the Mezzanine!!  I've seen pics and I just about fell in love (its not your typical reception hall) but never got a chance to go over and take a look at it.

If you're already going to be in Newark, you should also check out The Newark Club.  I liked it cause it, again, was different....but FI didn't like it.

Everything is so damn expensive in our area :o(   My dream place is "Nanina's in the Park" in Belleville (same city of the church I'll be marrying in), but it is way too expensive.

Do keep me posted on the Mezzanine!

They were $165/person with a minimum of 200 on a saturday night.  With taxes and such it comes to like $210!   For a sunday, the minimum is 175 ppl and the price starts at $140.

mhanna22 - I wished I could find the darn book, but when I got engaged, a co-worker bought me a magazine which had ALL venues for NJ-North, South & Central.  It gave their price range, what they do, what they don't do, how many ppl they hold, etc etc., You may want to look for that magazine and look thru it.

thanks kpnice....I have a few books like that but the pricing is always for winter time on a sunday so it looks low... :) but I've visited a TON of places in Jersey maybe like 30...but nothing has clicked yet...some say i'm too picky...I just want it to be as close to perfect as possible...the Palace is the closest so far.

you could always go the beach route - merrimakers.com - to have your wedding at the beach, 1hr mixer and then the reception is like $119-$139 - it includes cake, linen, beautiful scenery, etc - we opted for the informal beach wedding b/c it is $99pp and all outside (more up our alley).  But the venue was beautiful - you get the entire place to you and....upstairs - there is the balcony/deck - omg - it was so nice, just imagine your friends/family being able to hang out there with their wine and watch the sunset on the ocean!!

I am getting married at the Palace at Somerset Park on October 10, 2008.  The place is absolutely beautiful.  We just had our food tasting and the food was exquisite.  I booked with the Palace over a year ago and they have been extremely attentive to all my needs.  I highly recommend it.
