Pets and babies? Annoying questions from people...

So Dh and I have 3 cats. Since we announced that we are having a baby, the popular question has been "so what are you going to do with your cats now?".... I am so confused by this question. What to you mean what will we do? We will keep them of course.

Seriously? We LOOOVE our kitties beyond words and so far they have been our babies. Of course we are keeping them. Absolutely no question about it. They are a huge part of our family, and not in any way disposable simply because we are having a baby.

I mean yes we will have to change some things (like the fact that the kitties will not be allowed to sleep in our bedroom once the baby comes), but over all I do not see a huge problem. In Europe no one would have asked me this question because almost everyone has cats. My sister had a cat with both her children.

Yes we will be keeping a close eye on them so they don't snuggle too much with the baby (lol they are very loving), yes we will be keeping the kitty toilets far away from the baby (Dh has not allowed me to even touch them since we found out).

I am getting frustrated about the shocked looks we get when we say that the cats are staying. Ugh. Pets are not disposable to us and we do not feel in any way overwhelmed by the idea of cats and a baby.

Is this a common thing to get rid of your cats when having a baby? I never knew that honestly.

Just wondering what you all think about cats and babies coexisting lol...

I was asked the same thing - and had the same thoughts as you (although I was still in England then so some people are stupid there too! Lol)

I stayed away from the litter, bought cat nets to put on the Moses baskets and got them new beds that we started using super early so they were used to them when the bubbas arrived.

A friend's husband worked at an animal adoption centre and offered to come and take them for me! I was mortified!!

Haha :) Yes I guess there are unreasonable people everywhere. I swear I am getting so tired explaining that cats in fact do not wish to harm babies....lol. Also it seems the older the person, the more they judge us. I guess I get a little offended because these cats are a big part if our lives. We adopted them from when they were super tiny ( I mean could not eat yet, tiny. We actually got up every 2 hours to bottle feed them for weeks) and we spend a lot of time with them.
Our friends understand, but aunts, uncles, and grandparents.... Not so much :-/

Ugh, I feel ya! My mil actually told me my dogs were going to eat the baby...wtf? And the baby was going to ingest a hair and have it attach to his liver...yea.
My son LOVES our two fur sons and the cats at my mom's house - he is a born animal lover :-)

Really? People asked you if you will give your cats away? I'm from Germany and really, I never heard that someone give their pets away only because of having a baby.

DH and I are going to buy a dog when I'm on maternity leave. For us it was clear that we will always get a dog later, but right now we have both unfortunately not the time to take care of the dog. And also we are not allowed to keep them in our current apartment. But since we are currently house hunting and TTC, hopefully it will work out soon, that we finally get a dog. I just think with babies it is much nicer to keep a pet - they can get used to the baby - and honestly, that's sooner rather than later :)

As long as you make sure your pets get attention they shouldn't be a problem - one of my cats was a real AW so any time someone came to visit they had to fuss around him before I let them near the babies!! Lol

Glad to hear I am not alone hehe ;) Yeah we definitely treat them like babies. It just makes me sad that not everyone sees their pets as a permanent commitment :( You would be surprised just how many people think it is just ok to get rid of them at the slightes inconvenience. That is why shelters are overflowing.
