Photography/Videography Recs for those on a tight budget?

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if you have any recs for photography/videography. We're on such a tight budget and I'd say We'd probably only be able to spend about $2,500 at the most for BOTH :/ Any ideas?

You know what you should try - craigslist.

I know I know, I sound crazy but I found my photographer for Florida for $1200 for five hours and unlimited negatives, all retouched, photographer and assistant. http://www.wilsonphotographs.com/

Just an example, I don't know what you are looking for but its worth a try. Some are not so great naturally but if you sort through there are a lot talented people that have only done a few weddings and are pretty reasonable.

Hi Hi,
I have same issues as you. My original plan was to spend $3000 most on my photography(i live in bay are)but i noted that A LOT of wedding photographers INCREASED their package price A LOT for the wedding in 2008. Some photographers recommeneded within my budget by some brides here but I actually received the quotes from $4000 to 5000. It is crazy!!!
Anyway, I have been searching photographers for almost two months...I actually three candidates for your price range. I think all of them are very good and responsive. Below are the details. It really depends on which style you like. I believe this information is pretty accurate since I just got the quote in these two weeks.
1. SF/Bay Area

Heather Wiley Photography-Price:$2500 for 8 hours shooting.
www.hwiley.com

2. LA
Zenia Photography-$1100 for 8 hours shooting.(This is really good deal!!!) She is willing to travel
www.zeniaphotography.com

3. San Deigo

Bobby Earle Photography-$1500 for 6 hours shooting. He is willing to travel too. Bobby is really nice guy and he responded to my email within two hours just right after I sent out the email.
www.bobbyearle.com

Hope this help!!Good Luck

Heather Wiley Price: $2500

I'm sort of in the same position as you. For me, photography was a big priority because I know I'll look through the pages of a photo album a lot, as opposed to popping in our wedding dvd. So, I've only set aside a few hundred dollars for our videographer, hoping that I can just find someone who will videotape the events for us with a regular camcorder (maybe even a friend?). I'm thinking I'll look on craigslist or just ask a friend's friend. Someone suggested that after the wedding, I may even send the video to a professional editor to have it spruced up a bit. By saving on my videographer, I'm able to splurge on my photographer.

Oh, here's one more tip...my photographer had a package where for about $2500, I get her for 6 hours, negatives/dvd, proof album, engagement session, and a few other small things. I was able to save some money by not buying the album right now. After the wedding, when I'm not so strapped for $$, I'll be able to order our album. This way, I was able to hire a higher end photographer without spending too much money. Maybe you can find a photographer in your area who provides a sort of a la carte package so you can postpone buying the album (which can be so expensive depending on the type you want) until later.

To bring over my previous comments on this subject:

I've referred her before, and I have to say it again. I just had my engagement photos done with Nataly Lemus and they were WONDERFUL! She has packages for 7 hours (and up) for $1200 with two photographers. She's fantastic. Here engagement sessions are $250 or $200 when you book with one of her packages. You can read more about this and what others have said here at PW on this thread: http://www.projectwedding.com/post/list?page=1&topic_id=1165

I don't know if her prices are changing in 2008, but she's really nice and will answer all your questions quickly. She does amazing editing on ALL your photos and has a high standard of quality. She also has a blog, so you can check out a lot of her recent work that isn't on her site (http://www.natalylemusblog.com)

Check out her official site, too: http://www.natalylemus.com

I second Nataly Lemus. After Mandy posted about her I met with her and she is a really sweet and honest person. I like the fact that she answered all my many, many, many questions and alway replies fairly quickly. It was very important that I connect with my photographer because I am extremely camera shy and I want to feel comfortable with the photographer.

Both her prices and personality are superb

I second LOHBride. We just met with Mandi (Photography By Mandi) last night. We really like her work and her personality. we are also on very tight budget. We kind of negotiate with her...
and the good news is...she did offer us $250 discount. I think we are going to book her.

I currently have Zenia as my Photographer for the wedding and engagement. Her pricing is pretty good, but she may have increased it being that it's a new year. I've met her before and she is really sweet, professional and on top of everything.

WOW! Thank you guys soooo much! I'm gonna take all of your advice and start contacting these photographers ASAP! I hadn't come across one stressful moment while wedding planning until the photography/videography search began! It's so hard especially because for me this is one of the most important things since it's the only thing that can capture the day forever. It sucks too because there are so many photogs out there and I heard that's who the Better Business Bureau gets most of their complaints about, so I don't know who to trust! Anyways, THANKS ONCE AGAIN!

I truly love Nataly's photography style. She did our engagement session and wedding. (www.natalylemusblog.com)I was on a budget for the entire wedding and I did a semi detailed review on all my vendors if anyone would like to check it out. As for the videographer, I looked around on craigslist.com and found Egan Jover. He's very reasonably priced and I was able to get our wedding dvd after we got back from our honeymoon. you can contact him at http://www.myspace.com/misterjover or (213) 3458-2269. Leave him a message, he is very nice and helpful. I'm not sure how much he charges now but he's reasonably priced as well. I can say that I didn't spend more than $1,500 for both photography and videography.

I've been trying to find the best deal for videography, but it's really hard to get something inexpensive! ndpix.com is based out of San Diego but will travel to LA and OC. His rates start at $450 for 4 hours with 2 locations and one edited DVD.

Craigslist is also a great resource (as others have mentioned), but it's tough to find someone who is worth your while.

For photography, I'm leaning towards Nataly Lemus, Sarah K Chen (who just was added on to Amy Squires team... so I hope her prices don't go up!), Zenia Photography, and Renee Broughton.

Good luck!

I recently contacted Nataly Lemus and noticed that her packages do not include a photo album. Did any of you brides or bride-to-be's add a photo album to her package? If not, did you print the pictures and create it yourself?

I didn't have nearly enough money to book a photographer at their package prices, so I called a photographer whose work I really liked whose packages started at $2500 and asked if she worked outside of packages. Because I was willing to give up some things, like an engagement photo session and having two photographers and was willing to make my OWN photo album I saved a lot of money.
So I get a fantastic photographer whose work I LOVE for five hours plus all the digital prints on a disk for $800. She also threw in an online photo album that I could send my guests to where they could see all the pics.
I'm betting that part of the reason I'm getting a deal is that my wedding is in the off-season (April) but I just wanted to mention that it doesn't hurt to negotiate or ask about prices beyond packages.

FutureMrsB - I didn't add a photo album to my packages with Nataly, yet. However, I most likely will. She does offer the flush mounting features (she's partnered with KISS albums, et al), but, I'll also print my own and use something that I've found online.

FutureMrsB -I am planning to add an album for $800. She has a few different albums, but I don't need anything too big.
