Plastic Plates vs Chargers

I am trying to decide what I should do. My FI definitely thinks that we should not spend much on the plates and he believes the hard plastic plates are fine. But I LOVE the gold chargers! I think I might be able to convince him, but I also want to be smart about it and if there is not much of a difference then I would just order the plastic plates.....any advice???

I prefer the chargers as well.. especially with the look you're going for.

Sometimes I feel like I shouldn't ask him, but I am just trying to get him involve and ask for his opinions....and sometimes he ends up convincing me to do other things

Thats why I have you ladies :) to help me make my final decisions haha :)

I love gold chargers - but you can't eat from them... so unless you will also be able to buy or rent regular plates for people to eat from then I wouldn't get the chargers. If money allowed it I would get regular white plates.

I was really worried about my table looking full enough because I didn't get chargers - but my venue prefers not using them because they can seat more per table and we needed the max amount at each table so I couldn't get them... but with napkins and menus and all of the glasses it ended up looking really full without the chargers:

Another alternative to think about would be these white porcelain plates with a gold band, available for under $1 apiece.

i agree with kristinkay. you can't eat off the chargers so  would you purchase plates?

your inspiration is beautiful. i hope you can pull the whole thing off, but if the budget doesn't allow, the plastic plates will be decorative.

kristinkay you have a great point, and I was worried about the same thing, your table looks amazing!

I will think about it more, and maybe wait until I make sure I have plates

2dBride  thanks, thats a great option I will take a look at those, that is a great alternative, still having the gold in there :)

Honestly I think the ones 2dbride posted would be better. I think plastic plates are really best for more casual weddings - and if you using that gold and ivory table setting as your inspiration it looks like you want something more formal, so I don't think the plastic would be as appropriate or go with your theme.

If you used the plates 2dbride posted you could add a really pretty gold napkin or menu with lots of gold details to bring in the gold detail.

Ditto Kristin...you can't eat off charger plates, you have to put a regular plate on top of them.

I love the plates you posted from smarty had a party....but if you are going for a more formal look, I think you should use real plates and not plastic.

It also depends on how you're doing the dinner I think. If you have the chargers, whether it's sitdown or buffet, people will have the actual food plate on top of the charger anyway. Whether they bring it back to the table, or a server sets it on the charger. Do you guys have to supply the plates you're eating off of as well? Unless you have to pay for those too, the chargers are are there just as decoration to add to the tables. I want to do them just bc I'm prob skipping chair covers (the chairs have gold studs on them to match) and I wanted to jazz up the tables a little more.

When people are eating, there's two plates on top of each other. The charger is larger than a normal plate and sits under the food plate as decoration.
