POLL: How much did your destination wedding cost?

Hi everyone!

I am looking to get a rough estimate on how much destination weddings cost the bride and groom.  My best friend is getting married, and she is looking into having a destination wedding.  So I am just trying to find out if having a destination wedding is more cost efficient then having a wedding at home.

If you could please reply with how much you ended up spending, or how much you will be spending on your destination wedding, it will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Kelly

We are spending between 15-20K for our wedding in Maui.  We are having over 50 people (not by choice) though....

I think whether it costs more of less than a wedding at home depends on the style of the DW.  If you are having a (somewhat) smaller, but still "traditional" wedding, but you are having it somewhere else (for example having 50 people in Hawaii), the you probably aren't going to save much, if any.  If you are having more of an elopement type wedding where you don't do all the "traditional" wedding things, and have no guests or just a few guests, then you might save.

We had the 2nd type of DW in Jamaica.  We had 4 guests.  I bought an inexpensive bouquet, and went with a very basic wedding where most everything was provided by the resort.  We spent about $5500-$6000 for the wedding and 8 days we were there.  Here is a pretty good breakdown of what I spent so it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

dress-$500 inc tax/alterations; jewelry-$65; photog-$1k (plus a $500 outside photog fee from the resort); 8 days at the resort-$3k; upgrades to wedding package (upgraded flowers, upgraded arch, and a hair/makeup session)-$200; resort video guy and DVD of the wedding-$300; spending money on the trip-$500-$1k.  The basic flowers, cake, and drinks for toasting were included.  Our guests paid their own way.  We stayed at an all-inclusive so meals/drinks were included also.

So for us, we spent much less than we would have for a wedding at home plus a honeymoon.

Ours is at around $15,000 right now for our DW in Mexico with 40 people.  It really depends on where you want to go too, Mexico is usually less expensive than the Caribbean.  We ultimately decided no Mexico because it's cheaper for our guests to travel and we wanted to make sure the people we love could afford to go.

Yeah, 50 people was NOT my idea!!  Unfortunately both of our Moms got on the phone right away telling everyone about it and asking if they would come.  We are still cutting about 3/4 of our family form the wedding, we both come from large families, so I must have been dreaming when I thought we could get away with only have a small # of people coming.  I guess we should have gone farther away than Hawaii!!

My wedding's in August in Colorado, and if you include 6 nights in a honeymoon cabin, flight, rental car, etc.... it'll come out to be around 8-9k. If just wedding stuff (officiant, flowers, photog, reception, etc) - it's about 5k. For about 10-20 guests

about 15-20k. But this is for 85 guests in Jamaica. Right now we are at about 16k but my wedding is next May so i will use this ball park. We are Jamaican so there was no escapting the guest list as we have family already in Jamaica. 85 is actually small in comparison to what it would be if we had it in the U.S.

That total includes the cost of the wedding, a welcome cocktail party the day before, Photography, Decor and Flowers, All food and Cake for the reception,DJ, our honeymoon (5 days at another resort) and roundtrip travel to jamaica.

It does not include my dress or his tux, hair/makeup which are getting as wedding gifts.

Dainty, are you going through a planner or did you just do it on your own? We like Jamaica and I would like to have it there but have also considered USVI since you don't need a passport and it would be one less expense for our guests. What package did you get? resort? We want to try to have it decided by the end of this month or early June so we can give guests a year or very close to it to save?

anyone else having an at home reception? when do you send out invites for that? i want people to come to the DW but just have the at home reception for those who really can't make it. i feel like if i give the info around the same time, people will just say, i'll just wait for the reception. how did you handle that?

We are have a small DW in the Bahamas! We are paying for both sets of our parents to come on a 4 night cruise to the bahamas to see us get married and left the invitation open to the immediate family. The cruise, plane tickets for FI, myself, our son and 4 parents is 3800. The ceremony package with flowers, license, officant, coordinator, wedding cake, champagne toast will be 2500 and our photographer, along with an assistant photographer is cruising with us because she does destination weddings and that is 2000. Lastly, a 2.5 hr reception with food and alcohol for approx 15ppl is 1000. TOTAL=9300....plus spending money. The good thing about the cruise is that food is included all week for you and your guests!

We spent a good amount (20,000+), However in lots of ways its like having a wedding here in the states. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what you expect for your wedding. You can spend 1,500 and get a free wedding package at a resort. Or you can do a top of the line wedding package at and expensive resort, bring in your own photographer, cake, music, florist, rentals, ect.. And anywhere in between. My best advise is not to do a DW to save money (unless you are planning on eloping) Do it because you dream of getting Married on the beach, on a mountain ect..

We are having the very "basic" wedding in MX at the dreams. Little guests. I have 2 dresses. My FI suit is Studio suits. Beautiful custom tie.

But sprucing it up a tad. Our own custom details along the way.

Fans/programs. Dinners with placecards/OOT bags. Bridesmaid gifts/robes/the whole sha-bang!

Our photographer is shooting the wedding and i will edit. I'm trained in photoshop cs3.

When we return to the states we will have a dinner on the beach. All glassware/dishes ikea. Our cake will be there/favors pashminas/candy bar/drinks/wish tree.

SO overall............probably 14,000 +

It may seem like a simple wedding at the dreams but with our add ons and extras we spent more than 13,000 and with extras like spray tans/nails that is not included. Mac makeup (hehe)

It's looking to be around 18,500 for the wedding with hotels/flights included. We are having about 25-30 guests and marrying in Sonoma.

@SunnyD-I did a package with the resort. We are not using travel agents. The guests call the hotel to reserve and they also make there own travel arrangement with whom they choose. As far as packages, Negril escape has various, I chose the largest one and then build on from since i have 100 guests (it went from 85 to 100 can you believe that?).

Overall i dont thing destination weddings are cheaper unless you are doing eloping style but i always wanted one so that didnt matter.

our wedding will be no more the 10,000. the resort package is 5,000, and include a welcome cocktail party, ceremony, cocktail hr, and 4hr reception, with premium open bar, the extra will come out to be about 4,000 if that we are VERY CHEAP and I'm DIY EVERYTHING.

We are lookin at 8k including honeymoon! We could have gotten it for a lot less ut we opted for a photjournalistic photographer and FH wanted a particular DJ, but if we would've gone with the resorts it would have been about 5-6k.

The big money saver for us is that we will be legally married so it's technically a vow renewal. Also, at out resort we get to have a semi private dinner for FREE and then we selected to have a private reception at one of the outdoor bars (we had to pay for this).
