Prescription Diet R/D Canine?

Has anyone used this brand? Our vet just recommended it for our overweight puggle. I am worried because it's prescription food. :/ I am sure it is safe as my vet recommended it, but I would love some other reviews from ladies who have used this for their pets. Thanks in advance! :)

Ok I am not a vet or an expert my any means but I have done extensive research on canine nutrition and have a very good friend who IS a canine nutritionalist.  Honestly I would never feed any of my animals any Hills food.

There are many quality dog foods out there that will help to regulate your dogs weight.  A few of them are California Natural,  Innova, I would feed the senior formula.  Taste of the Wild.  Wellness senior, among others.  The senior formulas have less fat so in essence it is just a low fat diet for your pet without compromising quality.  Also, you can add green beans to your dogs food and that will fill him/her up without adtional calories.  I think for a puggle I would maybe do 1/8 of a cup per feeding, just reduce the kibble by that amount.

Dogs need meat and filling the food with corn, soy, and by products...among other things can lead to allergies and poor health.  I know that having your vet recommend it can make what I am saying confusing but remember that vets aren't nutritionalis and sometimes they say to feed a certain food because thats all they know.

I know premium foods can be expensive but it really does make a difference in your pet's health.  Honestly, I think the ones listed will be comparable to r/d if not LESS!!!  If these foods are too expensive for you I can probably find something cheaper based on where you live.

Here are some websites on the foods Ive listed

Let me know if you need any help, I know you can find a better food to regulate your dogs weight that will be better for him/her than Hills :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me! :)

Would you recommend Innova Senior Canned Food or Innova Lower Fat Adult Canned Food for a 3 year old puggle who is over weight? He is close to 45lbs, but should be near 30-35lbs.

I want to get him the canned food because I am minimizing his treats, and he gets really excited about wet food - almost like it is a treat! :) He is so used to eating lots of treats and table scraps which I won't be doing anymore, so I want him to still have something he likes. :) He'll still get about 1 treat a day, but no more table scraps.

Thanks again for all your help!

I think I would start with the low fat.  It has more protein and almost the exact amount of fat percentage.  The difference is less than 1%.  Also the low fat has more fiber so I think that will make him feel fuller and he might not act like hes starving.

You could also mix the wet food with the kibble if it gets too pricey.  I do that for my dog sometimes and he acts like its Christmas :)

Oh, also Im not sure if you have switched his food before or not but it is best to do it slowly.  You just add a little bit of the new food at a time so his system gets used to it.  It could take a week to get completly on the Innova.

No problem at all!  Let me know if you need any more help!!

F/U: I ended up getting Wellness because Innova apparently just got bought out by Proctor and Gamble; therefore, is no longer on the top 10 dog foods.

Yesterday was our first day feeding him the Wellness brand, and he loved it! :) Also, he hasn't had table scraps in three days -- I am proud of myself and him. hehe.

Thanks again for informing me about all the healthier choices out there!! :)

Thanks

My dogs are fed a homemade diet as I don't know much about commercial dog foods anymore.  As far as treats...the only treats they get are Charley Bears and they are only 3 calories per treat.  You may want to look into getting those.  My dogs love them!  They are small too so they are great for training.
