I loved the idea of the sweet table, which  would work  out great with  us since he wants a cake and I would  much  rather have cupcakes. That would  be  the way to have the  best  of  both  worlds... Thanks for sharing

Wow, really wish I would've went this route. We didn't spend a fortune but certainly more than $5k. Our wedding planner was great and saved us money in a lot of ways we would've never thought about.

Wow you had some great ideas! I'm doing my own wedding as well and so far I'm budgeted to $3000 with a guest list of about 50. Your ideas have inspired me to keep track of everything and post my own budget wedding story and I hope it helps other brides in this terrible economy. My date is July 28, 2012.

Let me start with that I am getting married on May 19, 2012 and we are paying for our own wedding. In my opinion when it comes to budgeting a wedding its all about the research you put into it.  Example:  My dress.  I have always wanted some great massive expensive princessy dress and well I have changed my mind over the years and now I have found a fabulous dress that David's carries for around $900  and I have to order it 6 months in advance.  We are waiting on our taxes to get everything paid for so I couldn't order it from a store and get it on time.  I found a few websites that carry the exact same dress for a fraction of the price so now The dream dress I have tried on and am in love with I will be able to order and recieve in less then 2 weeks for less then $200 and I have a friend to do alterations.  I am doing all my own cake and desserts for a huge Venetian dessert table to incorporate my Italian heritage  and most of what we are doing is a backyard luau, hawiian shirts included!!!  As well as working with some local businesses on getting services and products donated in return for advertising on things like invites/programs/etc.  It sounds weird and and may sound tacky but There are very classy ways to incorporate this without looking like a nascar driver.  I am hoping to write up a little break down after the wedding and right now we are going on a $200-2500 budget for 130 guests!  Wish me luck and congrats to your sister!!

I have fabulous news that not all might know about that could save you money on the venue you love. It is worth it to ask the venue if you can purchase services without their " wedding packages" I am a wedding photographer so I had good information from a previous bride that she didn't purchase a wedding package from the Inn. Instead she booked one of their function rooms and ordered one of their two buffets. HUGE savings. So I contacted the same vendor and got the same deal for my daughter saving us $2000 and we also got use of the venue for the ceremony for only the cost of the chair rentals. Then the next bonus, my daughter went out the next day and bought her dress off the rack......beautiful lace dress Regular $850............she got it for $99, her veil cost 3x's the dress. Now....we just have to wait for July 6th and I will be one happy mom. Do not be afraid of asking questions if you feel you don't need all of their services.

I am also planning a may 19th 2012 wedding as well as waiting for taxes to pay for everything. I have been doing as much research as I possibly can in order to save asmuch money as possible. I found the dress of my dreams at candress.com for only $109.00!! They also have good deals on all female wedding attire. I'm trying to stay under five grand as well. I'm seriously stressing out because we sat down and made out our guest list to find that we will be having right around 300 guests. My fianc?e absolutely refuses to cut back on the amount of people. I also want a very formal and elegant wedding and dont want to give it either. You only get married once! I found my veil and gloves for a combined total of 12.00 on eBay. That included s&h and the items were brand new! I'm making ourwedding favors and invitations myself to cut on cost as well. Good luck to all you lady's and thank you for all your helpful comments!!!

My wedding is October 13th, 2012. I am a DIY bride, and have also been very fortunate in several areas. To start with, we found our venue over a year in advance. We booked a huge enclosed shelter at a local park with beautiful surroundings. In fact our wedding will be outdoors, weather permitting. The hall holds 390 people. It has stone fireplaces at both ends, a sound system and 8 sets of 12 foot doors down each side if we want to open it up. So if we can't so the wedding outdoors, we will bring it in! Cost was just $250.00 for the rental of hall and use of grounds. We purchased a beer and wine permit for $40.00. Because we live together, most people knew we already had everything we needed. So, we found a lot of people started donating their talents to help with our wedding. Our dear friends who are karaoke dj's, they our having our cake done for us, and doing ALL of my florals for the wedding. In fact, they are better then some of the florist work I have seen. A couple in our wedding party, they have paid for our catering! What a wonderful gift!! Our DJ/Karaoke guy for our wedding, he has given his services as a gift. A dear friend is doing the makeup and hair for the bridal party, and giving us a spa day at her house for a pre wedding day run through! We have been very blessed! I have made our invitations, and our little wedding gifts to our guests and even the decorations. We borrowed white christmas lights to hang in the rafters, and I have collected about 100 mason jars to use in a project for candles. I keep posting things on my site here... so stop by and check it out. Oh... and my dress... orginally $1200.00 I purchased 2ed hand.. but never worn for $340.00!!

I'm getting married November 16, 2013, my fiance and I started two months ago saving for our wedding. The guests list is now up to 130 people and he keeps on adding folks- as he knows ALOT of people all over the U.S. and Africa. It has been very difficult to find a venue in the N.C area where that is so so elegant and gives you the option of having family to cater the food. We have found out the cost of food takes up a large portion of the wedding budget. The wedding isn't even close and I'm about to freak out! I need help on this wedding all way around- I have ideas, but help putting all of the pieces to the puzzle together. We have a budget of 10k- For some reason I think the budget is going to be more considering our taste.

I absolutely love this article!  I just recently got married in the backyard of our home in Temecula, CA.  We too planned everything under $5,000. My husband and I have known each other over eight years, and knew when we decided to get married that it didn't have to be an outrageous affair.  We just wanted to share our love with our family and friends.  Friends giving us referrals helped keep the costs under control.  The largest expense was renting the tables, chairs, linens, DJ, photographer (which we got for a phenomenal price!) and dance floor.  My husband and I couldn't have asked for a more memorable wedding!  The weather was beautiful and all our family and friends loved our party!

ALthough I'm not a fan of the dessert only receptions I do love her dress.

It is one of the most appropriate and "bridal" dresses I've seen in a while. Was it a long dress? Someone please post a link to where it might still be available! I love that it is modest without being frumpy and simple without being plain. This is a bride who will not look back on her photos and think "what was I thinking to wear that?!"

This is really helpful to me!  I am also planning a backyard style wedding, and there are so many additional costs that come with it that normally come with a venue.
