Luckily this is not the case in my country!  I'll keep my maiden name till I die! :)  Actually we have 2 last names: the first one is our father's and the second one is our mother's.  This happens in most Latin countries.

My employer required that I have my new social security card before they would process any paperwork, so you may not be able do that in advance, as the article advises.

Also "With these two important documents out of the way, you should have no trouble changing your name on your bank accounts, credit cards, passport, and insurance policies" is a bit misleading. You won't have "trouble," but is is a very time-consuming process.

You must visit your bank IN PERSON with your new drivers license and a certified copy of your marriage license in order to change your name on your bank accounts, order new checks and get a new debit card and/or bank-issued credit cards. They will not do this except in person.

Many places will not do this on the phone or internet, it has to be done by mail or in person, because they need a new signature on file.

Replacing your passport requires new passport photos and surrendering your current passport, so make sure there's enough time before you need to use it.

Other key things to remember are the title on your car if you own it, your car registration, and all other bills/utilities that are in your name.

Good luck!

Ditto on Yosemitebride - you got it only one more thing to add... to change your passport you must send in your actual marriage cert. they don't accept photocopies - they will send it back to you.

What are the differences with the process if you are only able to file a domestic Partnership, but still want to have a name change?

Anyone know if I *have* to change my name right away? Can I wait a few years? The reason I ask is that all of my vital documentation was just renewed for 5 years and I don't want to re-pay to change everything! lol

OR... you could just not give in to a patriachal society that expects women to submit to their husband.  I'm not a super feminist, but I think it's absurd that people think they need to have the same name as their spouse to have a family.  My mother never changed her name when she married my father, and I was raised with a mom with a different last name than me, and I will tell you what, it was NEVER A PROBLEM!  Women: Stand up for yourself!  Be your own person!

I cant wait ti change my name and be part of my h2b's family! im a very strong independent woman, i work in the oil field for crying out loud; i dont have anything to prove about my independence i guess.  If you talk to me for 5 minutes youll know i have my own personality, i do like how in spanish cultures they use both names for the family name.

It's going to be alot of work but work it. Plus I can't wait to get rid of the hyphen in my name...it's been a problem for 26 years! It will be weird not being referred to as my current last name anymore.

In the end I can't wait to be Mrs. B !
