What is the proper etiquette regarding engagement parties these days? Our wedding is in 10 months, what is the latest we can hold an engagement party without it feeling too close to the wedding? Are gifts encouraged/discouraged for an engagement party or how do they work if you are accepting gifts for the wedding?

elcee: My FMIL researched the etiquette and said that is not "expected" of guests to bring a gift to an engagement party. If this will be in place of a shower, then it may be more acceptable. Personally, I would have the engagement ASAP- close to the actual proposal. It starts to get "cluttered" towards the wedding in my opinion- For example, bridal shower #1 in Nov, lingerie shower in Dec, bridal shower #2 (other guests) in Jan, bachelorette party in Jan, then wedding.

Spread out the parties and have the engagement in the beginning! Check with Jaryce she hosted a fabulous E-party!

My FH and I have a long engagement while we finish college. We don't want to wait until its too close to the wedding, but we also dont want it to be ridiulously early, since we still have 3 years to go... What should we do?

We just got engaged last month and have yet to begin much planning. Just getting ideas for now. But we are very excited and want to have an engagement party soon. Is it okay to have one before setting a date for the actual wedding? We were maybe even hoping we could get some good ideas from our friends and family who attend the party. Is there a standard or tradition when it comes to engagement parties?

My fiancee and I have decided to have the engagement party as soon as possible as the wedding is a year away.

In my opinion, the wedding will be a huge event and the planning will be soo overwhelming that we wanted to have a private more intimate engagement party free of all the wedding planning drama. It is also a chance for you to have another big event, before the wedding with a completely different theme and ambiance!

Me fiance and I have deicided to throw an all white party. We're having it the Saturday after my birthday, so everyone will assume it's my birthday party. We'll announce our engagement sometime that night.

Because it's going to be disguised as a birthday party, we're going all out. Hotel ballroom, DJ, caterer, etc.

So far the only people that even know about us being engaged are our parents. I haven't worn my ring since he bought it. At first I was excited about the element of surprise, but now I'm starting to realize just how long I have to keep this a secret; my birthday is in March :-(

My FI's grandmother has a cabin at a creek. We plan to go to church with her on a Sunday and then a bunch of people will go to the cabin for a BBQ and that's where we will announce our engagement. No one will know but him and I.
