Good for you! Congratulations!  I'm happy to hear cautious wedding planning in this economy. You have great suggestions.

Just the type of advice I was looking for.  Thanks for sharing!  Where & how did you get your venue for no fees?

Nalukea, for the venue, I googled country clubs/banquet halls in the area and 1st checked out their websites. Many have all their event information listed online. If they didn't have information online, I would simply call them to see what they offer. If it seemed reasonable, then I would set up an appointment to see the facility with the event planner and see what kind of deals they could work out for me. I also found some good ones by word-of-mouth. I suggest asking everyone you know that has recently gotten married for suggestions they may have. These are tough times & reception venues need customers as much as the next business. You will be surprised what you can bargain with/talk them into. If you have a venue that will give you a good deal, but may not be the ideal location, ambiance, etc. - use it as a bargaining chip. "Well, ____ country club didn't charge a cake-cutting fee, could you offer me the same?" The worst they can do is tell you no, right? I hope this helps, good luck and congrats:)

The contest thing is a great idea!!!  It's so awesome that you got your dress for free!
