As someone who travels moderately for work, I find having a standard checklist very helpful. I just leave a template of the list on my computer, and print it out each time I travel. What is missing from this list are some really important items: prescription medication, over-the-counter medication (especially if you're traveling to another country, you don't want to buy the wrong type), glasses or extra contact lenses, first aid kit (in case there's no easy to find CVS), your cell phone (for emergencies, not for work!), your cell phone cord, hard copies of phone numbers in case your phone is stolen or dies, and cash (not like GoodFellas amounts of cash, but enough to get you to the embassy in the event of an emergency).

Great article.  Another thing to possiby add is to make photo copies of all debit/credit cards, medical, insurance cards, etc. that you carry in your wallet or purse and store the copies in your suitcase.  This way if you lose your wallet/purse for any reason or it gets stolen you have all phone numbers to get things canceled at your finger tips and as soon as possible.

To add on to the already helpful tips from others, depending on where you're traveling, you may want to make copies of your passport, BC, social security card and immunization record (all of mine fit on one sheet).  Leave a copy with someone back in the states (parent, trusted friend/relative) as well as bring a copy with you but keep it separate from your original passport. I know too many people who have had their passport stolen recently (Europe and Asia are notorious spots for this) or were hopping from country to country and despite what the DoS travel website says, when you're in the country and they want to see all your immunizations, it can be a HUGE hassle to try to get people in your home, find your records and fax it to the embassy. May seem tedious/overly cautious, but it does happen more often than not in some countries. Better safe than sorry!

Depending on country you should also bring water and iodine tablets. Like when visiting Mexico. Boil before drinking or stick to non-mixed drinks.
