"Rat Pack" Themed Christmas Party/Wedding Reception

OK, just had this crazy idea.

As I have mentioned before, we are having our wedding reception/Christmas party on Dec 6 2012.  It will be about 70 people, with buffet dinner, desserts, music, dancing.

The music will be a mixture of Classics and Christmas songs.  Think Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, etc.

I originally wasn't really planning a "theme" to the party, just mainly wanted colors to be cranberry/cream/evergreen.  But...I was thinking how cool would it be to have a totally retro/vintage party.  I could wear a Swing Cocktail Dress (tea length). He would be in a suit.

Can you guys help with other ideas?  Not real sure what else to include or do.  I'm thinking the colors need to change to more red/green, etc.

Any input is appreciated!

bump!  Maybe I should have said more like 50's Retro (but not sock hop).  More like the formal dinner parties/supper clubs of that era.

I am so all about this and cannot believe I didn't read it earlier.

My dressmaker is the queen of the 50s tea length dress - Dolly Couture.  If you friend the designer, Dolly Thicke, on facebook, you'll see more inspiration there than you could ever hope for.

You've gotta have an Olive Bar!

You HAVE to have martinis, and maybe some root beer floats for the non-drinkers!?  Even milkshakes?

As far as food, you can go somewhat simple I think: pigs in a blanket for appetizers, mashed potatoes, definitely some casserole plates (even possibly make it a potluck!?), maybe some sort of roast or carving station.

I think decor you can handle, but something important would be to make sure guests dress for the event.  While people don't like to be told what to wear in general, to keep with the theme they have to play ball.

(This is obviously not *the* rat pack, but the inspiration is obvious.)

My biggest inspiration for my wedding is the movie Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn & Fred Astaire, from 1957, so I'll leave you with some Audrey for inspiration, too
