Received check with wrong name on it

Okay, so I just had my wedding and one of the cards from a family friend (that I personally don't know well but my parents are close to) gave us a check for $40. Nice!

The problem? Instead of being made out to Mr. & Mrs. Woods or even Kate Woods (my name), it is made out to "Krista Woods" (Krista is my youngest aunt's name and we look alike so people always mix up our names).

My ID still has my maiden name on it and since my name isn't Krista, what do I do? Do I endorse it as if it were made out to the correct name (Katherine Woods) and hope the bank doesn't notice? Do I tell the bank what happened? Do I call the person who gave us the check (man, I really don't want to have to do that)? Or do I just void the check and forget about it?

Thanks for any advice!!

Write 'pay to the order of' the correct name on the back. . .well, ask the bank first - the maiden name/married name shouldn't be an issue.

Show them your marriage license, and don't mention the first name.  Or wait until you change your last name with the bank.  The first name shouldn't be an issue - mine gets misspelled all the time!

draw a single line through the first name and write the correct name above it....shouldn't be an issue at the bank.

Ok so I work at a bank.  Here's the low down, don't endorse the wrong name!! That's way illegal and if for some reason they check up on it you could get in tons of trouble.  Second, you can't alter a check.  Banks shouldn't take it if its been altered.  If it was your own check yeah you could correct it, but because someone else wrote it you can't alter it.  Third, technically you're not allowed to deposit a check into your account with someone elses name on it.  If you could get your aunt to sign it first, then you sign it, you could cash it or deposit.  Probably the easiest less stressful way to do it is to get the person that wrote you the check to write you a new one.  Which I know is a hassle.

Now, if you have a bank that knows your really well that you've been going to for years and years they would probably do it for you.  but if you walk into any old bank who doesn't know you from Adam, they may give you problems.  Hope this helps!

Well, it is a bank that I've been going to since day one - my birth checks were deposited into my savings account there when I was born. :) Hopefully they will understand. Plus, the aunt whose name was used formerly worked there, so that's a plus. :)

I'm going endorse it with my real name (I figured signing it as Krista Woods would create trouble) and see what they have to say about it. Thanks folks!

I used to work at a bank too. Usually the bank will have you sign exactly like it was written on the front of the check, then sign below with your real name (assuming they know you well). I would take the check to your specific bank first and ask them how they want you to handle it since every bank has different policies.
