Refinishing/Restaining Wood Floors...

DH and I have hired out for our first project... we got a really reasonable quote from a guy who refinished and installed some new wood floors in my parent's house.  We also got 2 other bids in order to shop around, both of which were $300-500 more, so we are definitely going with my parent's guy.  Right now when you walk into our front door, there is a tiny square "patch" of wood flooring by the front door.  To the right is our living room/front room which is carpeted along with the path leading into the kitchen, which is wood.  It's sort of silly.  So we are refinishing all the floors and instead of having that "patch" of wood, continuing the wood from the front door all the way into the kitchen... since we're refinishing the existing, we can choose a new stain.  Right now the kitchen cabinets are builder grade oak... yuck, not a fan.  Eventually I want them to be white though.

Will it look silly to do the floors in a darker stain and have the cabinets stay oak until we paint or reface them??

Here are some pics from before we moved in...

And the weird patch of flooring by our front door which we'll continue all the way to the kitchen...

I think it will look fine with the floors being a darker color.  Especially since you know that somewhere down the line, you're going to change the look of the cabinets anyway.

Might as well get it done now and not have to worry about possibly wanting to change the color again later after the cabinets are done.

Great idea on extending the front door patch.  I don't think it will look bad at all to have darker floors with oak cabinets.

I am sure you know this, but you will have to be out of your house for a day or 2 while they do the work.  My parents shacked up with us awhile back when they had their floors refinished!

Really Plum?  I only question it because we had our floors refinished at our old house, and we were able to be back in that night.
Mind you it was the Summer time and we had to leave all of the windows open for a few days, but they said it was fine for us to be there.

Hmm...perhaps it depends on the company and the amount of work?!

That could be.  We only had a small space get done.

Mel, I think we're able to stay there. :)  The day that they stain is the only day where the guy said we might want to consider staying elsewhere, just purely because I'm pregnant and there might be fumes.  But he said if they finish early enough we should be ok.

I think a darker wood floor would look good!  Sounds exciting :)

Weird...how did this get bumped without any new comments?!  (And no, I did not bump it with this post...it was already at the top)

I noticed that...before you click into it, it shows Amanda's comment as today's date but now it shows 11/7 on that actual post.

I'm the group owner and I accidentally "edited" the thread and saved it again.  So it bumped it up.  I meant to post a new thread instead, which I did. :)
