Registries

Okay so my friend hasn't sent STDs but has registered and made her website known. Looking at her gift registry, trying to figure out what to order, everything is around $500+... She's registered with Tiffany and the like. I'm sorry but there is no way, we registered for things from TARGET and our most expensive was a few (5) things between $200 and $700 from Horchow... Can I just get her something not on the registry list??

PS we're talking about 200 items, I looked through every single page!!

Wow, that's crazy. If I were attending a wedding with a registry like that, I'd probably give them a gift card. Or maybe you can go in with another guest or guests? I did that at a friend's wedding, three of us pitched in and got the couple a big item from their registry.

If I was really close to the bride or groom, I'd definately call them out on that registry. "Where's the registry for your non-millionare guests?"

Good luck!

I agree that a gift card might be your best bet.

Wow. I am always amazed by the things people register for. FI & I just started our registry and most of the items were in the $20-$80 range with a few more extravagant items.

I like the idea of going in on a gift with a couple other guests if that's an option. If all else fails- gift card! =)

I definitely agree with the gift card idea! That way she can buy things off her registry that she doesn't get as gifts. We actually just registered at Crate and Barrel this past weekend and were feeling bad registering for $80 place settings! And that's our most expensive thing so far!! Some people!

I did just order a gift certificate for Tiffany. The funny thing is, and I'm not saying this in a mean way at all, they've registered a little out of their own league. And I already sent something from Tiffany's for their engagement party so... I'm done!
I think they've registered for the ENTIRE housewares dept there!

My sis told she went to a wedding and the bride had a Gucci purse on her registry!

Beatie, I was warned off of C&B because their merch is all seasonal and disappears... You want to be mindful of that because if you ever need to replace something or if someone wanted to continue the tradition and add to your sets on your anniversary; they can't. I had a great tea cup mug set there that I got myself around christmas. 2 of them are already broken and when I went to replace then, GONE. so annoying.....

Thanks for the head's up theDame! We really only registered for gadgets, cookware, casual glassware etc. at C & B so hopefully it won't be an issue. We're going to register somewhere else like a department store for dishes, nice glassware, linens etc. so that should be okay. But thanks for the advice...good to know! :)

HOLY CRAP!!! There are some many great things I want to register for, but if I did I wouldn't get any of them. Do others attending have the budgets for that? Is she capitalizing on her guest list?

I think it reflects poorly on the bride to register like that...but maybe that's just me.

I can't believe that! I felt bad registering for our china because it is $139 for a place setting. The china (and serving pieces) are the most expensive things. I really tried to give a good price range so that anyone could get us anything.

I agree, the gift card is your best bet!

The gift card is an excellent option.
You know, I have the same thought like yours, do I have enough thick skin to ask for this (whenever I was going through a $100 plus item)?
Before we freak out and curse to our fellow future brides (or maybe it's my way of reasoning) just because it is on the registry it doesn't necessarily mean it HAS to be. As you may have been with a consultant (and I've been told) some people gather money together (like coworkers) to buy something big instead of a little (sometimes useless) item. Also, keep in mind that the items on the registry are WISH items, if we don't pick them, the couple have the option of getting them by themselves with completion discount.
Yes, I got shocked at some registry but after all it's their registry, let them be. If you don't agree, you can get something you think it's appropriate or something it's them! If I have the option I'd ask for Gift Cards instead of registry.

Wow - $500 bucks range. That's crazy. What I'm planning to do is to make it word of mouth. Since my Fiance and I are paying out of our pockets and really we want just money. We are not going to register for anything ... if someone ends ups buying us a gift we don't like hopefully there is a receipt attached. If not i'm sure i'll figure something out with it.

Here's what my take was on this:
She is capitalizing on her guest list, s2bwilcox. She is what they call "aspirational" about her class so even though she has a heart of gold, sometimes she says and does absurd things. She is marrying an older man who is very comfortable but by no means running the world. Which doesn't really matter but I think its going to her head... She is very sensitive about class but doesn't understand that its kind of silly. When I said I was leaving my job to join FI in the military, without knowing anything about FI she said, "Why, you'll just be poor." I was shocked at the time and realized that we were def never going to be best, best friends. Sorry there's a lot psychoanalysis here!

Anyhow even if you can technically afford it, I don't believe you should stick your guests with bills like that. Never mind that there must also be an engagement present and we will have to fly to her DW. I also think it makes guests feel like, "Am I only getting an invitation so that I'm obligated to furnish her home?"
