Research, Research, RESEARCH!

I am going research crazy and I haven't really started yet.

Preparing for baby entails so much research. As parents, of course we want to be sure everything our child(ren) interacts with is 100% safe and this is where research is imperative.

Husband and I completed on of our registries last week w/o doing REAL research/investigating on any products so I was a little overwhelmed. There were many items I had to skip because as I told the lovely woman helping us "I have to research that'. From bottles, pacifiers, diapers, lotions, baby food machines, sheets to breast pumps I have to research them all!

There are just so many options out there, too many if you ask me.

Ive actually had to go back and edit my registry. The arms reach bassinet we registered for will not work with our bed. I found that out after reading numerous reviews on the product when I came home later that night.

Next stop baby bottles.

Sheesh!

It's a lot of work but it must be done right?

Have you tried reading up on Baby Bargains?  There’s a book and a website, both which were extremely helpful.  I didn’t even go near a store until I did the all research.  I was able to look and feel things at the store eventually but we still did about 95% of our registry online.

As for bottles, I didn’t register for much, just one set, Dr. Brown’s.  LO might be picky so I didn’t want to invest on a bunch if they didn’t work out.

It is so overwhelming!  Here are some things that I loved (my son is a year old).

Bottles - like the other ladies register for a bunch of little packs.  I tried about 3 different bottles before we settled on one brand (Playtex Ventaire)

Sheets - IMO Carter sheets suck!  They are too small and you have to wrestle with the mattress to make it fit.  BRU brand has been good.

Baby wash - We were using Johnson & Johnson Head to Toes but there is some chemical in it that turns to formlydihide (sorry no clue how to spell that) and then that can cause cancer.  We use the J&J Honey Apple (doesn't have the chemical) and regarding lotion my guy doesn't really like it so I have about 4 bottles un-opened!

Pacifiers - We loved the Avent Soothies for when he was a newbie and now we love the First Year Gumdrops

Diapers - I would try a bunch of different brands, we loved swaddlers in the begininng and then when he got bigger he switched to Huggies Snug and Dry.  Wipes we use the Sam's Brand they are unscented and work great.  Pampers wipes were rough IMO.

Every baby is different!  Let me know if you have any questions :)

The research was SO HARD! As moms (& dads) we want nothing but the best for our babies and there are so many options out there its hard to narrow it down to ones that will work best for you.

I too ended up doing most of my registering online because I would pick one thing to research and then once I found one I was good with I'd add it to the registry. Going to the store was so hard for me!

The research is killing me, too...it feels like my second full-time job :-/

@MNM: Totally agree with your entire post! Some of our friends live in cities with a BBB, but many do not. We would love to use it for a registry, but I'm not sure how well it would go over with everyone. Plus we live across the country from our families and friends, so the shower logistics are going to be really tough to figure out anyway. It's the only thing that I wish could be different with this pregnancy/new little one arriving -- not having our loved ones near us :-(

Yes, it is sooo stressful.

We actually registered with a friend of ours (she walked us around the entire store) and she helped us pick out things for the baby.  She was amazing (and not pushy), just informative.  She recommended products that we otherwise woudln't have know about.  Then I took her out to dinner.  I don't know if you have someone in your life who you know well enough with a young baby to ask this of, but I know it really helped us a lot.

Honestly, when you think about it, we are buying a bunch of stuff for a person we have never met.  Babies are people with likes, dislikes, and preferences....and they don't even speak our language!  Some clothes my bug them, some bottles might not work, and they just might not like certain toys.  It can be a tough call, so to a point, the "research" can only lead you so far.  It's important for intitial investements, though.  Especially for strollers, car seats, and monitors, IMO.

I second the PP that said to buy small amounts of different things to see what works and then return, return, return!  Save all your receipts.  Most stores like Babies R US and Buy Buy Baby will take things back and at least give you store credit if it is past 30 days.  Especially with newborn clothes...a lot of babies never wear them because they are more than 9 lbs!  Just something to consider.

Also, as a PSA, Babies R US takes BBB coupons!  They can't be expired, but they will take them.  Hope that helps someone!

Great suggestion KB!  I took my BFF that has twins she was a huge help!

Also to add - if you get something as a gift and you want to return it all you have to do is add it to your registry and then mark it as purchased.  They will only give you store credit.  I can't tell you how many times I did this!!!!!

One thing I forgot about was bottle nipples...most bottles come with standard ones that are too fast for newbie babies.  Make sure you have the slow flow ones!
