Room by Emma Donoghue

Sorry I wasn't able to read The Count of Monte Cristo with you ladies, I switched shifts at work and I have been a crazy woman tying to wrap up wedding planning. I did however have time to read Room this weekend on my flight to Orlando, holy cow! It was a very slow starting book but once I was forty pages in I was hooked and could not set it down. It is told through the perspective of a five year old boy whoes mother was kidnapped and held as a sexual slave. (Think Jaycee Dugard but not sensationalized with less graphic details.) Just thought I would share.

This book haunted me for days!  I thought it was well written but was so saddened by what I read.

This book still haunts me; it was one of those that I devoured within 24 hours, but I had to stop every now and then and just cry--it got to be too much at times.  I've actually recommended this to my students who were caught up in the Dave Pelzer books (A Child Called It, etc.), but I don't know if any of them have read it.

I thought about reading this book, but I knew i couldn't handle it with new mommy hormones lol!   I'll probably read it 10 years later.

it is such an incredible book. like moore said, i read it super quickly- devoured it. and i couldnt stop thinking about it  for at least a week.

my goodreads review of it: The first half of this book was a little bit difficult to get through. It wasn't bad, I actually enjoyed reading it, but the writing style took some getting used to and there really wasn't much gripping to bring me in and keep me coming back. But then, about half way through, BAM. It sucked me up and I couldn't stop. The first half I read over about a week, the second half I read in two days.

Like I said, the writing style takes some getting used to and even toward the end of the book I had to read slowly and re-read some sentences to understand fully what it meant. It's because it's written entirely from the perspective of a five-year-old boy who has never really heard many other people speak. The author was able to write in this style quite eloquently, though- pretty impressive if you think about it.

All that being said, I think overall, this book is very engaging and although strange, a good read.

I just started the "After" portion of this book.  So far I'm really enjoying it, and I'm finding it to be a pretty easy read!
