SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER - The Secret Daughter

I am stealing the excert from Cass, but here is our book of the... months!

"Secret Daughter, a first novel by Shilpi Somaya Gowda, explores powerfully and poignantly the emotional terrain of motherhood, loss, identity, and love through the experiences of two families—one Indian, one American—and the child that binds them together. A masterful work set partially in the Mumbai slums so vividly portrayed in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire, Secret Daughter recalls the acclaimed novels of Kim Edwards and Thrity Umrigar, yet sparkles with the freshness of a truly exciting new literary voice.

Kavita, a poor village woman, has just given birth to an infant daughter she names Usha. Terrified that her husband will murder the daughter because she's a girl, she journeys to Mumbai to place Usha in an orphanage. Meanwhile, Somer and Krishnan, a California couple struggling with infertility, decide to adopt an Indian orphan and end up with Usha. The book follows the twists and turns in these characters' lives as Kavita and her family experience changes of location and fortune and Somer and Krishnan raise Usha (whom they call Asha) who eventually seeks her roots in India."

Thanks Cass! Let's all try to get this soon :)

I just reserved it from the library.  Not my normal type of book, judging by the cover - I know - don't do that. :)

Looking forward to broadening my horizons and discovering new authors.  That is never a bad thing.

Sorry I'm gonna pass this one.  Being a (relatively) new mom I have zero tolerance for any story related to baby.  My heart already broke at the mention that she sent her daughter to orphanage lol!

I am in the middle of it right now.  Very well written I think.  I am quite enjoying the development of Dadima.  And while at the beginning I thought I would really like the character of Somer, I really can''t warm up to her.  She is annoying me and i can't quite figure out why.  However Kris is so human and I reallyl can see him so much better than Somer.  Anyone else feel the same way?

I finally got around to starting it and so far, about 30 pages in, I'm really enjoying it.  It is written so much differently than I was expecting.

how is everyone doing on this one? I ended up having to skip it because I've taken over the classroom in student teaching, and my night time reading is now grading, lol! I hope to pick up this bok another time, tell me about it!

I'm enjoying it although I currently have 2 books on the go, that being the problem with the library, books coming in before you've finished one. 'm flipping between both books so neither one is getting anywhere close to finished.

What I have read of it, I have liked.

So, I pretty much only get to read when I'm nursing my daughter. This book is ALREADY really emotional for a new mom, but as I'm holding my baby in my lap and nursing her- reading this is almost impossible. I have to stop after just about every chapter, put it down so I don't start crying or thinking sad thoughts! I'm about 1/3 of the way through, I'm gonna keep reading but its just taking me a while.

So far, I'm really liking it though. Really moving story, emotion wise at least. Well written too!
