Share your stories of how and when you were diagnosed.

Please share how and when you found out.  I don't mean to pry though I just want to know if there are others that have similar stories.

Three years ago, we went through hell and back.  Both of us were unemployed for nearly a year.  By the grace of God, DH finally got a job though with no insurance.  This lasted for nearly a year until he got his current job.  So for nearly two years we had no insurance and very little income.  In the process my stress level went out of control as did my menstrual cycle.  It would come and stay for several weeks, then a few weeks later would return.  At one point, I had it for FOUR months solid.  It was horrible.  There was nothing we  could do.  We couldn't afford an office visit and we were told he made to much to go to the Health Unit.  Anywho, fast forward to the beginning of 2011.  We finally got insurance and was able to see the doctor.  After a horrific exam, he put me on progesterone and told me I had PCOS.  I was not happy with the results, it was better though my cycle was still coming much more often than it should.  I literally begged for birth control and he refused.  So I searched for another doctor.  He told me that I had an underactive thyroid, and put me on BC, Metaformin (I am also prediabetic) and Levothyroxine.  I just had my levels checked and they upped the levothyroxine.  I really hope it helps with my weight loss.  I am still not sure if I have PCOS because the test they want to run is not included in my insurance, and we can't afford it.

I really hope all of found out before you had to go through what I did.  HUGS!

sorry, dreamingofyou, i just saw this post.  my father passed away so i havent been on here recently.

i started my cycle when i was 13 and for a year it was normal...came every 28 days and stayed for a week.  after the first year though, my cycle would skip some months and eventually got til i never had a cycle.  sometimes it would be maybe 3 cycles in 2 years.  because i was still going to a pediatrician and he didnt seem to think that it was possible for a young teen to have a thyroid problem.  my mom kept fighting to get me tested and changing my dr.  during this time i was also gaining weight, as much as 20lbs a month.  i was having a lot of stomach pain and was not eating much (a bowl of cereal for bfast, apple for lunch, and a light supper.)  when i finally went to a dr that agreed to test me, i was diagnosed with under active thyroid.

when i was 19 and had my first obgyn apt to have a pelvic done, the dr said he thought i had pcos or it could be my underactive thyroid that was causing my menstal cycle symptoms.  i never have found out which is the cause.

i have been going to a dr in ga and i live is sc.  he is really good with treating the thyroid.  my meds have been tweeked so much.  from one medicine to another and dosage to dosage.  once your meds are where they need to be for your tsh, t3 and t4 levels your body will respond.  my thyroid has been leveled out before.  i lost 60 lbs in 2 and a 1/2 months.  my cycled started to level  out and most of my symptoms started going away.  but then a lot of stuff happened and i lost my insurance and couldnt afford meds, so i was back to the drawing board with trying to level it out again.

now my cycle is like yours.  i never know when it will start or how long it will last.  my obgyn said that if it was pcos there is a chance that if i was not ovulating they could give me a pill to ovulate so i could get pregnant if i wanted.  if it was thyroid, then when the levels get straightened out the cycle would go back to normal so i could get pregnant.  so keep that in mind.

i have hashimotos disease which is a thyroid disease where my body is trying to kill my thyroid.  so my levels have to be checked even more closely.  in fact, i have an apt tom with my dr from ga.  i am pretty sure my meds will be increased again.  i still dont feel like i am where i should be yet, and i am not losing weight.

fyi:  before when i lost the weight i didnt do anything different.  i just lost weight cause my metabolism was where it should be.  with an underactive thyroid it is super hard to lose weight.

i am 33 so i have been dealing with this for ages.

I am so sorry krosa,  I didn't know about your Dad.  My prayers are with you.  Also, thanks for sharing your story.  I am so sorry you had to go through all of that and are still going through it.  Though I feel your pain, I am too.  Eventually they will get us figured out and we can go about our lives.  Please let me know if there is anything that I can do, including being able to vent to someone who understands.  Much love and hugs!!!
