Should I send save the dates?

Hello there!

I had never planned on sending save the dates, until my fiancee's aunt pointed out we're getting married Superbowl weekend (Feb 1, 2014). Then I considered doing so, and picked save the dates out to match our invitations. I talked to Mom and she thinks that I would be okay sending out just invitations... my fiancee thinks the same, but told me if I want to get them, to go ahead. The thing is, I do want to get them - but I don't want to spend the money necessary to buy them if they really are not necessary. Also, I feel a little silly because I had started asking people for addresses so I could have them together (we're inviting about 300 people) and organized for addressing once I got the save the dates ordered. I was expecting to order them this week and pick them up next Saturday, then mail them sometime in April. Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts, please!

Also, what's proper etiquette for sending out the invitations? Is now too early?

I agree that Save the Dates can feel like a waste of money sometimes, but it probably won't hurt to have them! Where were you thinking about ordering them? There are usually some really cost effective ways to get STD's out without breaking the bank.

As for invites-those usually don't go out until 2 months before the wedding, so now would be too early.

Overall, it's your call. If you think people will appreciate the heads up, then go ahead and send the STD's :)

I am going to echo what Uhlease posted! I think STD's might be a great idea because of the weekend you are getting married. And--they are so fun!!

If you are worried about cost--have you looked at making a cute postcard?? Then you would have slightly cheaper postage, and no envelopes. Vistaprint usually has great deals on their postcards. I used them for Thank You cards and spent $9 for 100.

I would definitely wait to send the actual invite. Cannot wait to see what you decide on--we love seeing pics!!

I also agree. STD's would be a great idea. And they don't have to be anything expensive either. You could print them out yourself. I got mine done at a local scrapbooking place, I brought my own picture and on a machine I put our names and date. I printed out 140 STD's for $40.

I'm sure you could find somewhere near you or online to do them for cheap and they would still look good. I think they are well worth the money, I love getting STD's. :)

I would be doing them through the camera and photo shop I used to work at - approx. $25 for 100, and then the fee for set up. So it wouldn't be really expensive, and then just buying the stamps for them.

Weddings happened for a long long time before save the dates. They are cute and fun; and they do give guests a nice heads up exspecially on a busy weekend. The best part about a STD is that you don't have to send it to everyone like an invite --I sent 4 invites to one house for my wedding!-- but they only got one STD and Since STD's are less formal I handed out a few to people I knew I would be seeing. So that saves a bit on stamps and production cost. Are they neccessary? No. Are they fun? Absolutely. If you have the budget and are willing, I say go for it.

there are lots of DIY save the dates you can take a look at! For example, www.weddingchicks.com have cute save the date templates that you can use. I plan on using them and sending them to a photo print place for about 10-20 cent each. or get them wallet sized and put a magnet in the back! so many ideas. cant wait to see wat you've come up with!

I would send ot STDs for a few reasons.

The #1 reason being is that 2 months is absolutely not enough time to book time off at a job. Most jobs I have held I needed a minimal of 6-7 months just to TRY to get the time off. Every job is different and this helps your guests attend. Also, it gives guests time to save funds for your day especially if they have to arrange a hotel stay.

#2, you may not be the only bride getting married in that timeframe. If I did not move our date again (due to unforeseen event) then I would be getting married the day before my first cousin and we live 5 hours about. ...That is way too much to ask of guests.

#3 they really are fun and sending out these STDs really makes your wedding more real :)
