Shower advice

I feel like I'm posting too much but I'm getting in a panic about my October trip to California to finalise all of the wedding plans.

I need advice about my shower. I wasn't too fussed about having one as it won't be a traditional shower in the sense of me registering and then people bringing and watching me open gifts. It's just too hard to transport stuff so when we ultimately register we'll register with a shop in Australia where people can buy gifts online and they'll be sent to us here.

So, the suggestion has been to tell people shower gifts are optional but if they want to bring something then they can bring something small like kitchen linens or even a recipe. Do you think that's okay? It's a bit difficult as I don't want to say no gifts because I know some of my aunts and friends may want to bring something but I also don't want to end up with a bunch of glasses or kitchen things that I'll have to leave behind.

Aussie....you know we're having our wedding in SF, same day as you....but my Matron of Honor is throwing us a shower in Iowa this weekend....when she sent out the invites, she told everybody it was a "dot.com" shower...so that they buy from our registries online, have items shipped to the house, and just bring a picture of the item to the shower...that way we don't have to lug/ship everything back to TX from Iowa....maybe something like this would work for you too?

Who ever is in charge could send an email out with the info to take the stress of all the stuff off your hands...  People will totally understand since your coming from far!

I also like the idea of making a recipe book at your shower (the ones when every guest brings their favorite recipe) and its something sentimental you could recieve that day and bring back with you...

Thanks again for all the good ideas. I was still stressing about this issue tonight as my sister emailed and said that my mom had decided no gifts at all. It made me a bit sad to think that people wouldn't even have the option to bring anything so I talked it over with my FI and he suggested registering in the US for just small kitchen gadgets and things that we can take back in our luggage. So I set up a registry with Williams & Sonoma and after a few minutes of picking out things like paring knives and a potato ricer I'm feeling a lot better about the shower - even depsite the fact my sister and mother who are throwing it keep bickering with one another and making me feel guilty about the shower even though it was their idea.

Anyway, who knew registering was such fun?!
