smoked salmon

Hi ladies! Ok, I know that raw meat and fish is not good to eat when your pregnant, that means no sushi or medium grilled steaks. But what about smoked salmon? I searched the internet about smoked salmon and pregnancy and I found all different opinions about it. One doc from a very well known hospital here sais it's absolutely no problem, another one said it's not too dangerous but you should better avoid it and some people say it's a no go like raw fish and meat.

I didn't call my doc to ask.. I ate some smoked salmon on Christmas, it was fresh.

I hope it didn't hurt the little bean... I have mixed feelings now about it and I feel a bit guilty...

I know it's stupid, caus I should have known before and just leave it, but... I know I can talk about it here...

Well I know they say salmon is ok because it's low in mercury and eating fish during pregnancy is good.  But then I saw where it says not to eat smoked, so I'm not sure.  But I'm betting you'll be completely fine.  The odds are so slim of getting sick, that I think they cause us worry over nothing.

Yes, you are right, it seems that we should avoid about everything during pregnancy...

I'm going to say that you're fine though, especially if it was fresh.  You're allowed a certain amount of even higher mercury fish than salmon is over a course of a month so I'm guessing your salmon is fine.

I've read that salmon is actually very healthy for pregnancy as long as you limit it to a certain amount per week. Of course you just have to make sure it's fresh and cooked properly :) I wouldn't worry about it!

Hi ladies, thanks for your support. I was very worried though so I called my doc. Now I feel better. She said that it's absolutely no problem with the smoked salmon, that from now on I should avoid it though. She said if I would have caught an infection I would have had it shortly after eating it. And in the very early pregnancy the risk is apparently lower. She said I don't have to worry, I'll be fine. I'm so relieved!
Thanks for listening!

That's what we're here for!  To panic together, haha.  And then have someone sensible step in and say it's ok. haha

I was just at the doctor's office today and while in the waiting room I picked up this magazine called Pregnant and Newborn.  And right there was an article about substituting certain foods.  One of the suggestions was to substitute deli meats for smoke salmon.  "Upgrade your lunch sandwiches by swapping out ...cold cuts for smoked salmon."  It's high with omega 3s.  Thought it was funny after reading todays posts.  So maybe AuntTate should take a tip from swissgirl and go for the smoke salmon instead  ; )
