Some favorite first dance songs!
Deciding on a first dance song for the wedding can be a difficult procedure. My husband and I have been to a lot of weddings together, and here are a few that have either been my favorite to see for other people or were close runners up as we were planning. (Many of them are older tunes, and many of them are not what you'd expect for a first dance, but that's just what I'm into!)
Additionally: DH and I struggled a little bit when it came to picking, because we had some ideas of what we liked, but he's much more literary than I am, so the meanings of the lyrics were of utmost importance to him when choosing the song for us. (Two strong contenders that got axed on this basis were Feist's "1234" and Camera Obscura's "French Navy".)
So these are all good songs that are "on message" I would bet all of your guests would love, too. :) Links will lead you to youtube recordings.
The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year
Just a perfect sentiment for a wedding, I think. It's also nice and short, with a moderately upbeat tempo, and easy to move to.
The Velvet Underground - I'll Be Your Mirror
My friend who just had her two year anniversary danced to this song first. VU are an acquired taste, but this song is short, sweet, and incredibly meaningful (particularly to them).
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
One of DH's groomswomen used this in her wedding, and it was a magical moment. Good tempo, lyrics are a little non-sensical (as per most Flaming Lips songs), but sweet. The couple's wedding band played it, nailed it, and it was so unique, so perfect for their wedding. Unforgettable.
Bobby Darin - More
My mother suggested this to me, as she'd always imagined it and loved it in a wedding setting, and I've grown to love it, too.
Al Greene - Let's Stay Together
This one is a little more commonplace, but that's for a very good reason. It brings it all home. Heck, I would even steal the lyrics and use them for my vows.
The Mud Flappers - The Sun
This local Orlando band played at our wedding. My (admittedly) music snob friends were pessimistic at first, but every single person there loved them. Everyone. So much dancing. I am personally hoping this slow, beautiful song takes off big time as a first dance classic.
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
I imagine this would be perfect for a small, intimate wedding. The song is a little moody, but it's so devastatingly, whisperingly romantic. Okay, maybe some people might consider this song outright depressing, but I love it. I could eat it up. Like I said, would work well at a really intimate wedding.
The Beatles - Something
George is by far my favorite Beatle, so any manner in which he is at the forefront of a wedding playlist is a good one in my opinion.
Ella Fitzgerald - 'SWonderful
A 1960s version of the classic Gerschwin song, popularized in the movie Funny Face, sung by one of the greatest singers of all time. And it's pure, utter, unadulterated joy. You could not ask for more.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
This was our first dance song. The lyrics are dreamy, the 6/8 waltz feel was lovely, and many of our friends sang along. That part was wonderful, too.
