SOMEONE TO MARRY US~

So with less than 7 months to go we are in need of someone to marry us! We are having the ceremony at a historic site and need to find someone to come to the site to marry us. Did anyone else have to do this? And if so - where do you start to look? Without this - theres no wedding!!

We have to hire someone to marry us since it's not at a church. Luckily, FI has an acquaintance that happens to have been marrying people for 20 years as a side business so we lucked out! Check the local wedding boards in your area...I'm sure there are many companies that do this where you are.

We were going to have to hire someone, but then decided to have our good friend marry us. He has actually done a few other weddings for friends and we just liked the idea of it being someone we know.

I had my brother get ordained online so he could be a part of it without being on FI's side

We used the White Robed Monks Father Robert Dittler. They do catholic ceremonys outside church.Since we are both catholic and don't want to get married in the church this was the best bet. Check him out if your in the Bay Area he's very highly recommended.

I used craiglist, no joke. There are a bunch of qualified people that are very reasonable. Also ask your site for recommendations or maybe there is something listed here in the vendor reviews.

Call your local court house and ask for the # of the Justice of the Peace. Thats who we are having to use since we are getting married at a local venue on a Sunday afternoon. The Justice of the Peace in our area can only charge what the state allows which in KY is $50.

One of our dearest friends got ordained for us. She wasn't one of my BMs but I wanted her to be part of our ceremony. She was so happy and excited when we asked her, and she's already ordained now & reading up on her materials. She jokes about opening her own Church Of Anna!!!!!! hahaha

Anyway, for us, having someone who actually knows us & cares about us seemed like the perfect person to marry us. It might be something to consider =)

I felt the same way as MrsTongToBe. Both DH and myself didn't feel comfortable being married by someone we didn't know, and since neither of us belongs to a church, we opted to ask a friend/mentor of ours to get ordained. He almost cried when we asked him, especially since he thought we were there to ask to use his house in Lake Tahoe. ;-)

He got ordained through the Universal Life Church and he did a wonderful job. It was so much more personal as the three of us worked together to write the ceremony.

Good luck!

Ask your venue for recommended Officiants and you can also Google Officiants in your area, contact them and o a few interviews. Another option to do DIY as the pp did. In CA, you don't even need to be ordained by the ULC, you only have to be Deputized for the Day. In other states, you have to be ordained before they'll commission you to be able to perform marriages, and that's where the ULC comes in handy. We went this route in Hawaii so that our friend could officiate with us. It was cheap and easy...

If you want more details, let me know.

When friends or whoever get ordained, is it legitimate? I love the idea of saving money and having a friend marrying us but I'm worried about the legalities. Obviously what counts is the license but I know in CA you have to have a ceremony so I just want to make sure that we'll be okay and won't have to get re-married months later because we weren't legit. Anyone know?

My future father in law will be marrying us. He got ordained by Universal Life Church. It was really easy and he did it online. It just makes it a little more special to have someone who knows us well do a truly personal ceremony.

http://www.themonastery.org/?destination=ulcLibraryMarriageLaws

That shows all the marriage law/regulations. Universal Life Church ordinations are legal in California.

Apparently, in Washington State (where I live) it doesn't even matter whether the person is REALLY ordained or not. If you THINK they are ordained and get married then the law considers you married even if it turns out they weren't legit. Weird.

Pixiedust~ Yes it is legitimate. My friend that is marrying us has done it a few times for other friends. I don't know if you are getting married in LA County, but here is a link to the LA website (http://www.lavote.net/CLERK/Marriages.cfm). You can even have someone be deputized for the day to marry you, they don't need to get ordained. If you aren't in LA I would suggest looking into the county website where you are to find out the rules for your area.

Little Miss - I'm actually now ordained too from the Universal Life Church. :)

Didn't take long at all and I did it online and was able to get all the paperwork needed. I'm now legal to marry someone in California as well, and as for Washington? Well. I used to live there for 13 years and they're laws are WEIRD! Someone I know had a friend "marry" them and signed a contract and now it's all legit! Craziness.

Cool Cari thanks! This is very interesting as my FI is having a tough time choosing Best Men so I might suggest to make one the officiant and the other the Best Man. I'm definitely getting married in So Cal...hopefully Anaheim for a DFTW but we'll see :)

My FI and I are planning the day before to get married in City Hall that way we can ask ANYONE to marry us for the ceremony the day of the wedding. Yes, we will officially have been married for a day but we like the idea of having someone really close to us marry us off.

Or an idea is that pick any person you want and pay for them to get be an officient. If it is a secular wedding that is. You can do this pretty easily.
