Survey - toasting flutes?

How many of you are having toasting flutes? What's the tradition behind that as you know it?

My grandfather's family had a silver coupe/tasse de mariage which went to my great great aunt. I think, I always forget how that works! Anyways, its basically gone so I don't have anything to use dictated by tradition, yay! Should I start a new coupe or go for the toasting flutes? This is a traditional coup if you haven't seen one before, you both share the same vessel and its usually engraved with dates and I think the names too:

How many of you photo 50633-1

My grandmother's family does toasting flutes and they use them every year on their anniversary. My grandparent's were lost after she passed but I think that is sweet too...

SO TORN! What are you ladies doing? Can you share your flutes/other?!

We are doing Waterford Crystal toasting flutes. As far as where the tradition originated from, all I know is that it dates back to ancient Greece I believe.

We dont really have a tradition of it in my family. But my grandmother has bought us a pair from things remembered to engrave. I think it would be really sweet to use your grandparent's coupe!

Champ~ The 'Loving Cup' is so sweet.  It's a shame the one from your grandparents is gone... I say, you start a new coupe tradition!

When we started discussing toasting flutes, my grandma told me that she always gave the flutes to the new couple (my dad & aunts/uncles, etc).  She asked if she could get us ours for the wedding and I couldn't refuse.  She asked what we wanted and we gave her 2 choices....

or

When we started discussing photo 51018-2

The first I fell in love with and the 2nd matches our crystal (and DH wanted these more).  My grandma chose the first and her reasoning was that they stood out and every year when we use them they are ours.  And years down the road when we are having toasts with many people in the house we will still have our special ones that no one else gets to use. :)

jackie, part of me really loves those old school coupes from the 1920's... I wanted them instead of martini glasses but they're so hard to come by, at least in complete sets you know??

Cari, that is the sweetest thing. Hug your grandmother for me will you? That is so cute.

Champ~ I would love to hug my grandma... For you & me... But unfortunately this is the same grandma that passed away 3 weeks before my wedding.  At least I will always have my toasting flutes...

DH and I debated on whether or not to get toasting flutes. DH doesn't drink (he has an allergy to alcohol, which is awesome at times when he's the permanent DD!)) and, even though I love champange, we weren't having any at the wedding. We opted to not have any special glasses and we toasted with whatever wine glasses the restaurant provided. I kind of wish we had bought some anyway. It would be nice to have them in the china cabinet to bring out on special occasions. Maybe DH will get all romantic and buy some for our 1st annivesary...

My sibblings and I started a tradition with my grandparents on landmark anniversaries (10, 25, 40, 50) we all pitch in and buy a nice set of engraved toasting flutes for the happy couple. We get one set that are the cheapest flutes we can find and engrave them with the wrong date and the names misspelled. Then they get the nice ones, with the correct info. Funny enough, the couples bring out the cheapie ones often at parties. It's kind of a cheesy novelty.

Oh Cari, the one and same?! Well she must have been so sweet and now those flutes are REALLY special :)

Abatty, that's too funny. Where do you go to engrave them? You don't do it yourself do you?!

Nah, we'll either get them at Things Remembered or find a local trophy shop that does champagne flutes. Not all of them can engrave on crystal. FYI for all of your engraving needs, trophy shops will be considerably cheaper than the departments stores or Things Remembered, especially for random plaques and engraved plates.

Hmmm... I can actually do the cheap glasses myself with that etching cream you can buy at Michaels. Something to think about.. and it'll look even cheaper than actual engraving. ;-)

abatty, I think you should buy those engraving pens as seen on tv type things! they have them at Target for $10... it'll look really tasteful if it looks like scribbles ;)

abatty...i'm the same way with alcohol...but i will have a little sip for the toast...I turn red and get all hot whenever i drink...which is never now....but i'm sure i will have water for the rest of the nite...that's part of the reason i didn't want to spend money on toasting glasses....
