The Price of Yarn

I have been asked by some friends to make them some items and they will pay me for them. Currently I am working on a sweater for my niece for her birthday Friday that I should be done with by Thursday. The yarn I mainly use for my projects is Caron Simply Soft. I remember many years ago when I first began using this yarn, it was .99 a skein. I purchased five skeins of yarn from Walmart for my niece's sweater and they were 3.49 a skein! I went to Joann's Fabrics to get some yarn because Walmart doesn't have all the colors and I was screaming when I got there and the skeins were 4.49!!!! That is just outrageous and even with two coupons I spent 21.00 on two skeins of yarn, two appliques and some buttons. Not only is the price ridiculous, THE SKEINS ARE SMALLER!

It is sad that you can't even enjoy a hobby these days!

AMEN (can't I get bigger font for this LOL).

I do not understand this either. I try to use coupons, gift cards, etc to get my yarn.  Too bad we all didn't live closer so we could trade/share unused portions, whatever to save money.

The benefit of going to Joann's is their coupons.  I get coupons by snail mail, email, by text, and by the Joann's app on my phone.  You can use them all at once if what you are purchasing qualifies.

I have noticed this too, even for Red Heart! I am ALWAYS scouring sales, red tags, etc for yarn because of this.

What about Michaels or Hobby Lobby?  Granted their coupons aren't as many as Joann's but I know Hobby Lobby's coupon comes every week and they both have phone apps as well.

Oh I feel your pain! I used to get my wool from a store called Mary Maxim (I don't know if it's in the states -I'm in Canada) but now that I moved, that sore isn't anywhere around here so I've been buying it in Michael's and Wal-Mart but the kind I love (Bernat Satin) is like $6 a BALL -so crazy!!

I have used more than one coupon on my purchases at Joann's, but it still doesn't really help because the skeins are smaller. I need to use double the yarn to complete projects now. Michael's doesn't have a large selection of yarn like Joann's and neither does Hobby Lobby. I can't believe the craft that is my possession is now breaking the bank! Shneffer I get the catalog Mary Maxim. The price is lower but the skeins are smaller too and by the time you pay for shipping, might as well have purchased locally. Ugh. Lol.

That stinks, but I get what you`re talking about. Up here Walmarts selection is really poor, and Michaels is exceedingly expensive even with coupons. Sometimes when I need a really nice type of yarn I visit a smaller non coprporate run knitting shop but those are special trips because they still cost more

I don't mind going to WalMart because they are carrying a little more than just Red Heart now.  (Caron Simply Soft is cheapest there for me!)  Even though I am disappointed that they don't carry any kind of wool.  I agree that their selection is extremely limited.  Michaels isn't much better as their yarn is down to an aisle and a half (maybe).  However, they carry different yarn than Joann's.  I find I like to walk the two aisles of Hobby Lobby's yarn selection because the yarn they carry is WAY different than Joann's or Michaels.  (I've never seen "I Love This Yarn" brand anywhere else.)  And since I'm relatively new to Hobby Lobby I'm more likely to shop their sales for "new" yarn so I can try out the different ones.

I do my best to stay away from specialty knitting shops because their yarn is WAY expensive.  I've found the cheapest being around $6-8 a skein for a few ounces to $20-30 depending on what they're made of.  I can't imagine trying to make a sweater out of that and having to buy 3-4 balls of yarn!  And the specialty shops generally have no coupons to use for a discount.
