The Secret to Losing Weight!

If you don't know already, I work at a gym, so I see a lot of articles written and what not on health and weight loss. Well, this one was sent to me, and I absolutely love it. It is funny and honest.


I am working on a bulletin board with this, so here is my version -all cleaned up for HR purposes. LOL.


*Give yourself a goal. Maybe you want to lose 10 pounds. Maybe you want to quarterback the Green Bay packers to the Superbowl. But be warned: Losing 10 pounds is hard.* 


*Develop a gym routine. Go at least 3 days per week. Do a mixture of strength training and cardiovascular conditioning. After the third week, stop carrying around that bag of cookies.* 


*No one in the history of the gym has ever lost a pound while reading “The New Yorker,” and slowly pedaling on the recumbent bike. No one.*


*Don’t fall for gimmicks. The only tried and true way to lose 10 pounds in 48 hours is food poisoning.* 


*Don’t get fooled into eating one of those “recovery energy bar with antioxidant dark chocolate” —that’s a chocolate bar.* 


*You can do the 10 minute ab video, the 20 minute ab video, or the 30 minute ab video, but there’s always the stop eating pizza and sheet cake ab video that’s even better.*


*If the gym or gym class you are taking is going to be effective, it should be hard. If you’re relaxed and enjoying yourself, you’re at brunch.* 


*FACT: Thinking about going to the gym burns between 0 and 0 calories. 


*FACT: THERE IS NO SECRET!! Exercise more and lay off the fries. The End.

I love this and I'm so glad you shared it. I always kind of wince when I see the posts about how can I lose 10 pounds the week before my wedding? Like it says, there is no secret and you can't do it in a week. It takes hard work and dedication and there is NO magic pill!!!!!! :)

Can I just concur about the ridicules folks at  the gym who think that some light peddling while reading a magazine/book/texting/talking on the phone/emailing on your ipad/etc is going to get you ANYWHERE!!!

How to lose weight without going to the gym?  (Because I just can't afford the membership!)


Diets are only temporary!  If you truly want to lose weight and maintain what you lost then you have to change your eating habits - what and how much.  (Diets will help you lose weight but not maintain.)


Limit yourself to 1 (flavored) drink a day and drink water the rest of the time.  Whether it's coffee, tea, soda, or even Kool-Aid - allow yourself one a day and drink more water.


Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.


Cut down on eating bread to once a week.


Make your portions smaller by at least one tablespoon per dish.


My biggest tip of all.  I see 3 stages of eating (when it comes to your stomach):
1. I'm no longer hungry, 2. I'm full, 3. I'm stuffed.  Most people pass by number one because they don't listen to their body to find that point.  A lot of foods will expand in your stomach while waiting for you to digest them; that's when you pass number two and advance to number three.  Or, whatever you're eating tastes so good that you don't want to stop.  But if you can find number one you can lose weight, have leftovers for tomorrow, be happier with yourself, and save on your food bill!


I can't speak for everyone, but this worked for me.

Ha! That's hilarious.


Though I will say I read when I'm on the cardio machines. I mean, it's still a HR above 160 for an hour, but Harry Potter just makes it go by so much faster. Just uh... don't mind the sweat on the pages. It'll dry.


I'm always curious about diets that advertise "No exercise needed!" You can trim down, but working out is a big part of being healthy and fit.

@siouxzan...You're right, our bodies are made to be "hungry" and "full" not "starved" and "stuffed" which is what a lot of us do.

If I could reach you I would give you a great big kiss!


I am at my highest weight and most unhealthy body I've ever been.  It breaks my heart. I know what to do, but I also know how much time I have to invest to get where I need (want) to be to be happy with my physique and my mental well-being.  I know the only person I am really cheating is myself.


To get myself to a body weight, a number, not the complete physical shape that I want, by my wedding day, I have to lose about 1lb per week.   It is doable, but I have to make the effort and I know once things start falling in to place I will feel 100% better.  


Oh, the stupidity of letting myself get lazy.

So true... cant lose weight if we keep eating the same, this is going to be one of my biggest challenges before I say yes to the dress :(
