Themes! Did you have one?

So I'm trying to think of a theme for my reception and am drawing blanks!! (Along with the color palette) my FI and I are big on Asian/Japanese culture. My mother actually has a vintage wedding kimono that I would love to incorporate into pics but it really doesn't match my dress. (Thought I could wear it for some pics) then I thought maybe I could wear it for an engagement session? I also have a yukata (which is a light weight cotton kimono... The wedding kimono is very heavy!) but I was afraid that these images would be too off the wall if the wedding isn't Asian themed??

Suggestions? Did you guys have/going to have a theme? If so what was it?

Hello and Welcome to Project Wedding! I am sure the other ladies have made you feel right at home! My wedding was centered around our love story which began with a rose & our romance. My color palette was neutral, I had a rose on my wedding shoes, my bouquet was roses, the invitations had roses on them, we did a rose exchange at the ceremony instead of the unity candle and the cake. There were rose petals scattered around the tables with candles. When DH and I first met, I presented him with a single rose after our wonderful first date. On our second date, he gave me one and almost seven years later, we still give one another roses!

As far as your wedding, start putting things together and see how they all looks. These days, people don't really stick with themes but of things that they love! I don't think there is no right or wrong way to do a wedding! It is your day, your way! Happy planning and make your wedding day your own!

start with the colors first and then go from there. What is your favorite color? what is his? youre wedding will be in the winter time so try looking at colors that go for that season. I fyou love the asian theme I think it would be cool to incorporate your moms dress in it! you can also opt for wearing it as a reception dress.

My theme is vintage/romantic inspired. The venue has a vintage look to it already so we dont really need to do much with it. We will have lots of candles and rose petals in corporated as well. And we opted for us to have a sweetheart table to show off the theme some more :-).

i highly recommend Pinterest as well! type in whatever theme you are looking for and see what ideas other people are thinking of!

Cant wait to see what you have in mind!!

Ditto Tressy!

We didn't really have a theme, just a bunch of stuff that we really love. Maybe take some pictures after hair and make up in your lightweight kimono? Or anything really. If it's something you both love, you can make it work!

I agree with what the other ladies here have said! If I'm unsure of how something is going to look I always try to do a mock-up. Take pictures and look over them with your FI (and parents/bridal party) to decide what works. I also think Pinterest is excellent for ideas!

We have a theme. I call it Modern Rocker Chic. My FI calls it Rocked Out Love. It suits us perfectly! =)

We don't have a theme as such, our wedding is a 'Marriage in the Mountains', but it's more of a motif running though the day - the same way that lots of couples use a monogram.

I didn't want a monogram because I changed my last name to FI's when we had our boys 5 years ago, so having the same surname isn't something special for our day. I've used the same photo on our invitation, website, all our OOT bag items and will have signs to direct guests to the ceremony site

We have a retro-disco nigth theme and we are trying as much as we can to have things go with it but I will not bent over backwards to do so. It's not that easy with Cyprus open type weddings.

I love your idea and I think you can make it work wonderfuly!

Our theme I guess you can say is romantic. We are using lots of candles everywhere. We are looking at a couple different venues. One is a castle so if we choose that I will encorporate some thinga relates to that. The others are more of nature as our back drop and one even has a barn type area where our reception would be. If we choose that I plan to add a few rustic type items. My FI can do anything with wood and he will make tree stump things to put some candlea on.

so i think i may go with the asian theme if the venue location looks like a good match for the theme... am thinking teal and red as colors (or blue and gold if i chose my first choice for a venue) and i had a crazy idea of dressing the girls up in simple kimono (instead of matching dresses) and the guys in Hakama (mans style kimono like outfits) do you think this is too kitchy? too tacky? :/ im aware my family probably wont get it... and his even more so. but i thought it would be fun, aliviate the stress the girls will have trying to pinpoint a style of dress thats flattering and it would be generally comfortable. what do you all think?

I didnt have a theme, and frankly, Im still thinking of a way to classify my wedding. We just had colors and worked in stuff we liked. That was all.

I think that you can do that.  I like both color ideas.  You could always have a traditional American ceremony if you want and incorporate more of the Asian traditions into your reception.

Our theme is our NYC Love Story, it has evolved more and more as Im planning which Im sure yours will also.  We started with alot of NYC elements, but I felt like that went more towards being about NYC instead of us and our story.  So now its more like a movie premiere of our love in NYC if that makes sense.

I think you have fantastic ideas!  Remember this is a day for you and your fiance so do what makes you happy.  I've attended quite a few theme weddings and they tend to remain the most memorable.  Your hair piece is so unique.  I'm actually helping my sis plan a "nature inspired wedding."  It will be held outside at a large farm in western PA.  She's serving up local, organic foods with acoustic music provided by family members.  She's wearing a simple, yet elegant "previously worn" dress and sent e-vites only to save on paper products.  We have been considering every last detail. Her ring (from Brilliant Earth) is even ethically sourced, made with recylced white gold and believe it or not, was "nature inspired."  They have a great blog with content posted on nature inspired wedding ideas that I recommend checking out.  We also decided upon individual cupcakes (with organic ingredients of course) topped with nature ideas such as birds, butterflies, leaves, etc.  Stick with what you like!  :)  Best of luck.
